1841 – A machine “for sticking pins into paper” was patented by Samuel Slocum of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He had previously invented (1838), but not patented, a machine to manufacture pins with a solid head. He formed a company to make what became known as “Poughkeepsie pins” (1839). One man tending two such machines could produce 100,000 pins in 11 hours. Slocum’s pin was the first with a solid head to be made in the U.S., though John Ireland Howe had made the first practical pin-making machine.

1846 – Dentist Dr. William TG Morton used an experimental anesthetic, ether, for the first time.

1862 – U.S. patent was issued for a revolving turret for battleships to the inventor, Theodore Ruggles Timby. When Ericsson built the first turret battleship in the world, the Monitor, he added a turret based on Timby’s design to the ship.

1882 – The world’s first hydroelectric power plant in the U.S. was opened on the Fox River, in Appleton, Wisconsin.

1898 – The American city of New York was founded.

1906 – The world’s first international balloon race began for Gorden Bannet Cup, in Paris. It was won by a coal-gas balloon, the ‘United States’ run by Frank Purdy Lahm.

1907 – Motor car speed traps were protested in a letter to The Times, London. Lord Montagu wrote to challenge anti-motorist complaints as opposing progress. To combat dust cloud nuisance from traffic, he called for more suitable roads: “reserved only for motorists and rubber-tired non-animal traffic – at least between large centres of population.” About speed traps, he continued, “By all means let police-traps be placed where there is any reason to think danger may exist, but … At present, the police neglect their other duties and look upon trapping as a regular sport” producing income to local government from the £5 or £10 fines for speeds of 20 or 30 mph.

1963 – The USSR led by Prez  Leonid Brezhnev,  openly lauded Indian view on Kashmir issue. This was against Pakistan’s motives.

1981 – Pakistan Commando soldiers release 66 hostages in Lahore from five Khalistan hijackers and activists of the Dal Khalsa International.

1982 – Aviators  H. Ross Perot and Jay Colburn completed their 29 days, 3 hours, and 8 minutes circumnavigation of the world in a helicopter (pic credit-Financial Times, UK).

1993 – 6.4 earthquake at Latur, Maharashtra, 28,000 killed. Sharad Pawar (Congress-I was the  state Chief Minister then)

1996 – Centre gives its consent to Tamil Nadu government’s decision to rename Madras as Chennai.

2005 – Controversial drawings of Muhammad are printed in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

2010 – The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court gave a three-part division of the land in the disputed Babri Masjid case to Ramlala, Nirmohi Akhara and the Waqf Board, (pic credit-ramlalla.archives).

Born…. 1149 – Chand Bardai, famous  blind  poet, expert archer and  friend commander  of Prithviraj Chauhan. He was  taken prisoner  by Mughal raider Mohammed Gauri alongwith  Prithviraj Chauhan, king of  Kannauj.  He  guided blindeed  Prithviraj  in a challenge fight with  Ghauri, to kill  Ghauri  by estimatig distance between the two. His  legendary  verse   “चार बांस चौबीस गज, अंगुल अष्ट प्रमाण, ता ऊपर सुल्तान है मत चुके चौहान।”   helped Chauhan nkill the  mughal  raider.  He composed famouus  epic Prithviraj Raso, having 10,000 Dohas (verses)  depicting King Prithviraj’s biography.

1207 – Rumi. Famous Persian Sufi poet,  writer and philosopher. Great poet who  wrote in Persian, Turkish, Arabian, Greek. Born in  today’s Tajikistan, he travelled  places in Central Asia, Iran , Balkh (Afghanistan)  etc. (pic credit-poemanalysis.com)

1881 -Deewan Bahadur Sir S Rajah Annamalai Chettiar,  educationist, banker,  famous musician, social worker and founder Governor of the Imperial Bank of India and  founder of Annamalai University.

1922 – Hrishikesh Mukherjee, legendary Bengal and Bollywood film scriptwriter, director lnown for several  satirical, comedy and entertaining  movies like  Musafir,,Anari, Majhli Didi,  Chaitali, Guddi, Satyakam,  Chupke-Chupke, Anand, Abhimaan, Namak Haraam,  Golmaal, Aashirwad, Baawerchi, Khoobsoorat, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kate  etc. He won 8 Filmfare,  One Lifetime Acheivement award,  Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke award. He also  got Nomination for Golden Bear, other International awards. He was also  Chairman of CBFC, NBFC.

1972 – Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee), famous playbacksinger, composer,  actor and  TV host. .Started singing at age 13  and went on sing  popular songs  in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Kannada and Telugu  languages. He has won 2 Filmfare and an IIFA award (pic credit-in-pinterest.com).  

RIP….  1985 – Charles Francis Richter, an American seismologist who devised the Richter Scale that measures earthquake magnitudes.

2001 – Madhavrao Scindia. scion of erstwhile Gwalior state and son of  last  ruler Jiwajirao Scindia, was elected Bhartiya Jan Sangh ticket in 1971  from Guna ran away to England during Emergency of 1975  but later  joined Congress  to become MP  from Guna and Gwalior on Congress ticket. He was Union Minister for Railways and Civil Aviation in successive govts.  of Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao. He ded in a private   aeroplane crash  during  election campaigning. His son Jyotiradidya is the current Central Minister for Communication in NDA govt.

In 2011 the number of Indian women with technical diplomas (not degrees) stood at nearly 19 million, up 146% in a decade. Compare this to non-technical diploma which is held by just 0.34 million (3.4 lakh).
