(National Teachers’ Day in India initiated in response to a request by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to dedicate his birthday to the nation’s educators).

1612 – East India Company’s Navy eastablished.

1885 – Sylvanus Bowser, inventor of the first U.S. gas pump, made his initial sale to Jake Gumper, owner of a service station in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The pump held one barrel of gasoline, and used marble valves and a wooden plunger. It was built in Bowser’s barn, and patented in 1887.

1793 – In the French Revolution, the “Reign of Terror” begins. (The Reign of Terror (6 September 1793 – 28 July 1794), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between two rival political factions, the Girondins and The Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of “enemies of the revolution”).  About 40,000 people were executed or killed during this period. The Revolution ended in 1799 thru’ King Louis XVI rule (pic credit-bisiteofhistory.com)  

1958 – 1st colour video recording on magnetic tape.

1968 – 21 killed by hijackers aboard a Pan Am jet in Karachi, Pakistan.

1972 – 11 Israeli athletes are slain at Munich Olympics by terrorists.  German neo-Nazis gave the attackers logistical assistance. Police officers killed five of the eight Black September members during a failed rescue attempt (pic credit-www.cnn.com).

1986 – Pakistan army storms hijacked U.S. B-747, 19 killed.

1988 – The country goes without newspapers on this day as the entire newspaper industry had protested against the Defamation Bill.

1991 – Nelson Mandela chosen as president of African National Congress.

1995 – 30 member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council sworn-in that was conceded by the Government of India in 1993.

Born…. 1888 – Sarvepalli Radhakrishan, President of India/philosopher. (His birthday declared Teachers Day in 1962).

1929 – Bob Newhart. American comedian, who produced  two most popular TV  shows Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back, and more. He won 3 Grammy, 1 Emmy and  a Mark Twain award fr American Humor.  His net worth was $ 656 million in 2024 (pic credit-cheatsheet.com). 

1947 – Dev, Punjabi poet and painter.  Jagraon born poet shifted to Switzerland in 1979 and has written poems/collections Vidroh, Doosre Kinare Di Talash, Matlabi Mitti, Hun Ton Pehchan,  Shabdant, for which he won Sahitya Akedmi Award in 2001 and Shiromani Punjabi Sahitya Pruskar (1992).

1950 – Vitender Kashyap. Indian economist,  politician from  Shimla (H.P.)  Elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014  on BJP ticket.  Member Standing Co0mmittees on Water Resources, Food, IT and MPLAD Funds management. 

1956 – Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Bollywood screenwriter,  editor, director, producer. He has won 4 National Awards, 7 Filmfare awards and several other accolades. His films Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots, PK etc have been on Out of the Box themes and were widely appreciated.

RIP….1997 -Mother Teresa [Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu], Albanian born Indian nun and founder of Missionaries of Charity (Nobel Peace Prize, 1979).
You may have known…. India’s national mean age for women’s first marriage was approximately 22.1 years according to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data from 2019-21, while the mean age for men was higher. The mean age has been steadily increasing.
