Punjab, Haryana rain; Bhakra dam under surveillance after surge

New rain has fallen in Punjab and Haryana, and the Bhakra dam is being monitored after a surge. People in the two states are scrambling once more to secure their resources and defend their property as a fresh spell of rain has started falling.

CHANDIGARH: As rain lashed numerous parts in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday, flooding several low-lying districts in both states, authorities are keeping an eye on the rising water level in the Bhakra dam.

Due to the rain, the pilgrimage to Pakistan’s Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, which was connected via the Kartarpur corridor, was postponed for an additional two days.

Following an evaluation by the BSF officers and Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal, the decision was made.

According to officials, the water level in the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar increased from 87,177 cusecs at 8 am to 2,51,987 cusecs at 2 pm as a result of rain in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. At 6 o’clock, though, it reportedly fell to 1,85,738 cusecs.

Bhakra Dam’s 1,680-foot maximum storage capacity was attained by the water level, which was at 1,652 feet. The dam, which was built on the Sutlej river, has seen a 12 foot increase in water since July 16.
