180 – Six inhabitants of Scillium in North Africa are executed for being Christians. It’s the earliest record of Christianity in that part of the world.

1790 – Thomas Saint, a London cabinet maker, patented possibly the first sewing machine, fitted with an awl that makes a hole in leather and allows a needle to pass through it. This machine made a chain stitch with a tambour-type needle to produce a mechanical crochet or chain stitch (pic credit-animalia-life-club).

I902 – Willis Haviland Carrier completed drawings for what came to be recognised as the world’s first scientific air conditioning system (pic credit-williscarrier.com).
1948 Indian Govt. announced that all discriminations against women in matter of employment will be done away with and in future, women will be eligible for any public service including administrative rsevice and police service.

1955 – The American town of Arco, Idaho, became the first community (population  of 995 in 2010)  in the world to have all its electrical needs provided by nuclear power. During the one-hour test, the town was cut off from all other sources of electrical power (credit-ontheworldmap.com).

1955 – Disneyland, California, the world famous Theme Park was opened by Walt Disney company  for entertainment and tourism in the region.

1996 – Madras city, the capital of Tamil Nadu  was  renamed as ‘Chennai’.  Photo shows old Fort St. George, founded in 1639.

1998 – The Rome Statute, the treaty that established the International Criminal Court, was adopted.

Born today.….. 1915 – Girdhari Lal Dogra,  an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir, belonging to the National Conference and later joineds  Indian National Congress.  Was Finance Minister of the state for 26 years continuously.

1941- P Bharathiraja, Popular Tamil actor, director and  producer. He  has  won  6  National  Film, 6 Tamil Nadu State Film   and  4  Filmfare South Awards. He was also  awarded  Padma  Shri in 2004.

1959 – Zarina Wahab. Acclaimed  Hindi and Malyalee actress. She  was first rejected by the Bollywood showman Raj Kapoor but she got very  popular roles in Basu Chatterjee directed films Chittchor and films like Gopal Krisha, Savan Ko Aane Do,  Gharaonda, Raees Zada and Malayalee films Madanolsavam, Chamaram, Palangal, Adaminte Makan Abu etc. She was nominated to National Film  and  Filmfare awards.

1969 – Ravi Kishan Shukla. popular  Bhojpuri  actor and singer. Participated in Bigg Boss Show and  Sab Kushal Mangal and a film Jala Debh Duniya Tohra Pyar Mein, produced by the American film company PUN Films, and was shown in the India Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010. He joined Congress Party in 2014 and fought Lok Sabha election from Jaunpur but failed miserably.  He later joined BJP and fougt Gorakhpur Lok Sabha election and won comfortably.

1984– Chahat Khanna. a model,  Bollywood  and TV serial actor. She won some modelling contests.  She acted in Qabool Hai,  Ek Main Ek Tum, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, etc.

RIP… 1992 – Kanan Devi,  an Indian actress and singer. She was among the early singing stars of Indian cinema, and is credited popularly as the first star of  Bengali cinema. Acted in early films like Haar Jeet, Abhinetri, Joydev, Parajay, Naba Bidhan etc. Awared with BFJA awards in 1942 and 1943, Padma Shri in 1968 and Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1976 (pic credit-Wikipedia.com)

You may have known…. 1.  Oldest evidence of Bread made from wild grains is discovered by archaeologists in a 14,000-year-old dig in the Black Desert, Jordan.      

2.  The National Rail Museum at New Delhi was set-up in 1977.
