1795 – “Marseillaise” becomes French national anthem.

1815 – Napoleon surrenders to Captain Frederick Maitland of HMS Bellerophon at Rochefort after his earlier defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.

1904 – 1st Buddhist temple in  Los Angeles, United States is opened. It’s called Hompa Hogwanji temple built in over 15 acres.  (pic credit-pinterest.com).

1929 -First  Airport Hotel  opens (Oakland California).

1869 – Margarine was patented by Hippolyte Mège Mouriés in France. He won the contest held by Emperor Napoleon III to find a substitute for butter used by the French Navy. His formula included a fatty component that mixed to a pearly luster, so he named his product after the Greek word for pearl – margaritari.

1915 – The first motor bus service was started in Bombay (now Mumbai).

1932 – US President Herbert  Hoover cuts own salary 15%. He ruled America from 1929 to 1933.

1948 – Alcoholic Anonymous founded in Britain.

1954 – The first commercial jet transport airplane built in US – the Boeing 707, the model 367-80, made its maiden flight.

1955 – The first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad announced the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, to the then Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru.

1979 – Morarji Desai resigns as premier of India. He was elected PM in 1977 when Janata Party came into power after Emergency. Jagjivan Ram was elected Janata Parliamentary party leader and became a Dy. PM under  Chaudhary Charan Singh  as  PM.

1986 – India protests against China’s intrusion of six to seven km into the Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh.

1991 – The 25-day-old Narasimha Rao government wins a vote of confidence in Lok Sabha by securing 241 to 111; 112 abstained.

2000 – The Maharashtra Government gives the green signal to police to proceed against Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray for his alleged role in the 1992-93 Mumbai communal riots.

2011 – India successfully put the advanced communication Satellite GSAT-12 into space orbit by a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Born…. 1783 – Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, great Indian Merchant, Industrialist and philanthropist. He aided famine relief, financed public works like wells, roads, causeways and bridges; founded dispensaries and hospitals; established educational institutions and scholarship funds; etc. He was receipent of a Knighthood and many medals.

1903 – Kumaraswamy Kamaraj, a South Indian politician who rose to be Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. popularly known as Kamarajar,  an Indian freedom  fighter  and served as the president of the Indian National Congress for two terms. He announced the names of  Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi as PMs in 1964 and 1966.  He is much  known for his Kamraj Plan, for reorganising Congress Party in 1967-68, when PM Indira  had become unpopular and had unstable Govt.  He got  resignations of  all senior Congressmen,  to induct fresh faces in Govt. and Party organisation.

RIP…. 1997 – Gianni Versace,  Italian fashion designer, shot to death by Andrew Cunanan at 50. He was a famous businessman and socialite.   He  founded the famous brand  Versace, an international luxury-fashion house that produces accessories, fragrances, make-up, home furnishings and clothes. You may have known…. Varanasi, also known as Benaras, was called “the Ancient City” when Lord Buddha visited it in 500 B.C., and is the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world. today. It’s also believed to have been the  abode of Lord Shiva, who selected it for  meditation.  Also known as Mukti Dhaam, because  it is believed, whoever  gets cremation here  gets eternal salvation. There are about 80  Ghats  (like Dashmesh Ghat, Assi Ghat,  Holkar Ghat etc. )  for cremation of  devotee Hindus after death.
