1854 – Walter Hunt of New York City was awarded the first U.S. patent for a paper shirt collar. Very thin white paper was pasted on both sides of a base of thin white cotton muslin. After being cut out or stamped out of this m
aterial, such collars could be pressed between heated forms to the shape of the neck. To guard against the effect of perspiration, the collars were then varnished with a colourless bleached shellac which also enabled cleaning by wiping with a damp cloth. Also known for inventing Fountain Pen, Sewing machine, Street Sweaping equipments etc. Walter Hunt was a prolific inventor, best known for the safety pin and as developer

2017 – Ram Nath Kovind becomes 14th President of India. Presently, he’s the Chairman, Committee on Electoral Reforms: ONE NATION, ONE ELECTION.

Born…. 1875 – Jim Corbett, writer, hunter and Forest conservation activist, who founded Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttranchal. He is credited for killing several dangerous and man-eating tigers and leopards (feature image credit-jimcorbettnationalpark.in).
1929 – Somnath Chatterjee, prominent leader of the ‘Communist Party of India’. He was also the Speaker of the Fourteenth Lok Sabha. The action of “Zero Hour” on the initiative of Shri Chatterjee has been telecast live from 5th July 2004 as he believed people’s right to know.

Average literacy rate in India is 77.7%. Though India has the largest illiterate population globally, despite a literacy rate of 74.04% as per the 2011 Census. The male literacy rate is 82.14%, and the female literacy rate is 65.46%. Himachal had the highest literacy of 100 % in the 1960s, Kerala is the next at a literacy rate at 93.9%, followed by Lakshadweep (92.3%) and Mizoram (91.6%).
