1858 – Fingerprints were used as a means of Identification for the first time.

866 – The use of the metric system was authorized by act of Congress as legally acceptable weights and measures in the United States, though it was not made compulsory. (A century and a half later, the nation has still not converted to the metric system).
1900 – Hamburger created by Louis Lassing in Connecticut.
1941 – World War I began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Following the decline of Ottoman empire of Turkish origin, the Central Powers tried to gain control over Europe. France, UK, Germany had major stakes yet Russia supported Austria, Bugaria and Serbia. The British rulers put in over 13 lakh Indian soldiers into the World War-I, (47,746 were dead and 65,126 injured in the War) apart from Austrailian and New Zealand units. Soon more countries joined the conflict; the WW-I ended on June 28, 1919 with signing of the Treaty of Versaillies between Germany and the Allied Powers led by the British and French.
1972 – India and Pakistan sign Shimla Pact, settling border dispute in Kashmir. It was the result of infighting between the East & West Pakistan, ZA Bhutto refusing to accept Muzib-ur Rehman’s leadership after the latter got major

1979 – Chaudhary Charan Singh becomes the 5th Prime Minister of India with outside support from Congress Party and breaking the Janata Party (led by Morarji Desai as PM ). His Govt. lasted just Five and a halve months when Congress withdrew support
1992 – Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray is banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years from December 11, 1995 on the recommendations of the Election Commission.
2016 – Earliest evidence of cancer is found in a 1.7 million-year-old toe fossil from Swartkrans Cave, South Africa, published in the South African Journal of Science.
2017 – Pakistan Supreme Court rules corruption accusations against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are enough to remove him from office.
2023 – Scientists genetically engineer female animals to reproduce without a male for the first time using Fruit flies.
2025 – India overtakes China as the top exporter of Smartphones to the United States, accounting for 44% of US imports as Apple shifts manufacturing to New Delhi due to increased tariff threats.

1965 – Ronu Mazumdar. Legendary Flute master. Born in Varanasi, he plays flute in all genres like Jazz, classical, contemporary, orchastra and chamber music. He performed jugalbandi with Pt. Ravi Shakar, Ali Akbar Khan. He was awaded Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2015.
