1780 – Great Hurricane  kills 20,000 to 30,000 in Caribbean, hitting Barbados island  first. Atlantic’s deadliest recorded hurricane (pic credit-worldatlas.com).

1796 – According to an unfounded legend, the metric system was born. (The Oct 10 date seems to signify the base 10 way of using measurements. A real birth date might be 8 May 1790, when acting on a motion by a bishop, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, the French National Assembly decided to create a simple, stable. decimal system of measurement units. The earliest metre unit chosen was the length of a pendulum with a half-period of a second).

1865 – John Hyatts patents Billard Ball.  He was the winner of a $10,000 prize offered for the best substitute for an ivory ball. He combned introcellulose, camphor and alcohol, heated the mixture under pressure to make it pliable for molding, and allowed it to harden under normal atmospheric pressure. 1899 – IR Johnson patents bicycle frame. (The frame could could be separated or folded to store in the truck of a car or other small places.

1933 – First synthetic detergent, “Dreft” by William Procter & James Gamble, goes on sale. Soap had been used to clean clothes for nearly 2000 years, but had poor performance in hard water. In 1920s the P&G researchers created special two-part “miracle molecules”, one end of which pulled dirt out of clothes while the other clung to water, suspending dirt until it could be washed away. Dreft eliminated the problem associated with soap and gently cleaning lightly soiled clothes (pic credit-wikipedia.com).

1946 – The Noakhali genocide began, marked by the murder, rape, and forced conversion of Hindus in East Bengal following the “Direct Action Day” on August 16. Over 4  lakh Hindus  were massacred  or converted to  Islam. Even Mahatma  Gandhi was not allowed by  rioting muslims to enter the area for peace efforts.

1952 – US mediator Frank Graham told the U.N. Security Council that there was a possibility of war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

1957 – US President Eisenhower apologizes to the finance minister of Ghana, Komla Agbeli Gbdemah, after he is refused service in a restaurant in Dover, Delaware.

1963 – The Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (LTBT), signed by Britain, America and the Soviet Union, comes into operation.

1970 – Union Government under PM Indira Gandhi,  ruled out any  judicial probe into the death of the late PM Lal Bahadur Shastri.

1976 – Beijing reports arrest of Mao Zedong’s widow Jiang Quing.  Though she  was an ardent worker of Chinese Communist Party under Mao,.  she was called  a leader of  the  Gang  of  Four and put in jail.  She  spent 12  years in jail  and  was  reported  to have  committed  suicide  in  May1991 (pic credit-visiontimes.com).

2001 – Construction begins on the Viaduc de Millauof bridge on the River Tarn in southern Franhighest road bridgece. The Millau Viaduct designed by Sir Norman Foster, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. THe tallest pylon is 340 metres high, making it the world’s highest road bridge.

1978 – Rohini Khadilkar, fifteen years old, became the first woman to win the national chess championship.

2014 – Malala Yousafzai & Kailash Satyarthi win the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

Born….1954 – Rekha, (Bhanurekha Ganeshan), an iconic actress of  Indian cinema known for her roles and on-screen presence. Daughter of Tamil actors Gemini Ganesan and Pushpavalli,  she debuted as child artist at 4 years age with films Inti Guttu and Rangula Ratnam, she entered Hindi cinema with Sawan Bhadon and continued to do  successful  films like Ghar, Mukaddar Ka Sikander, Khoobsoorat, Basera, Ek Hi Bhool, Utsav, Kalyug, Vijeta, Umrao Jaan,  Rampur Ka Lakshman, Kahani Kismat Ki, Kamasutra, Koi Mil Gaya, Krish, Namak Haraam  and Silsila etc. She was belived to have very intimate relations with Bollywood  heros  Vinod Mehra and  Amitabh Bachchan; yet latershe  married a businessman Mukesh Aggarwal in 1990. She was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2012. She has won a National Film award and 3 Filmfare awards and was honoured with Padma Shri by Govt. of India.

1990 – Rakul Preet Singh, Telugu, Tamil and Hndi film  actress and  known for Gilli  (Kannada) and  Keratam, Venkatadri Express (Telgu)  and  Yaariya, De De Pyaar De, Runway 34,   etc. in Hindi. She was nominated to a Filmfare and won a Filmfare South and some  other awards in  serials etc. (pic credit-IMDb.com)
RIP….1964 – Guru Dutt (Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone), a legendary  film actor, choreographer writer and producer/director. He is known many  popular and artistic films like CID, Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam, Paper Flowers,  Baaz, Baazi,  Jaal, Saanjh Aur Savera, Love And god,  Chaudhvin  Ka Chaand,  Mr. & Mrs. 55,  Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool etc  He was known for many creative and  tragic roles. He won a National Film Award, a Filmfare and  a BFJA award (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).

2000 – Srimavo Bandaranaike, the world’s first woman Prime Minister- ruled  Sri Lanka  thrice sbetween 1960 to 1965;  1970 to 1977, and 1994 to 2000. Following the assassination of  her husband in  SWRD Bandaranaike  in Sept. 1959, she took over the Party leadership and later became PM. Her daughter Chandrika Kumaratumge  also became the President of the island nation.
