1752 – 3rd great fire in Moscow in 2 weeks; 1/3 of the city was destroyed.

1850 – Levi Strauss makes his 1st pair of blue jeans.

1882 – The first American patent for an electric iron was issued to Henry Seely of New York City.

1899 – American inventor James Ricks was issued a patent for an “Overshoe for Horses”. The invention was a rubber horseshoe “to prevent a horse from slipping in sleety weather and to secure noiseless travel when preferred, and is applied over the horseshoe in common use.”

1903 – Hiralal Sen shot the first Indian Advertisement sequences for Jabakusum (hair tonic) and Edward’s Tonic.

1907 – Persil, the first household detergent, was marketed by Henkel & Cie, of Düsseldorf as the first “self-acting” washing powder in the world.

1942 – The first parachute jump in the U.S. using a nylon parachute was made by Adeline Gray. Cotton had earlier been superseded by silk but Oriental high-volume sources of the silkworm product were cut off during WWII. Fortunately, nylon, a newly invented synthetic substitute produced by the DuPont Co was available, as exhibited at the 1939 World’s Fair. Nylon parachutes had been tested with dead weights, but the military needed a live trial to confirm personnel use. Gray, a parachute rigger volunteered and jumped convincing an audience of 50 critical army and navy observers.

1944 – World War II: The Battle of Normandy begins. D-Day, code named Operation Overlord commences with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France. The allied soldiers quickly break through the Atlantic Wall and push inland in the largest amphibious military operation in history.

1947 – Gandhiji writes to Mountbatten, with Pakistan conceded, to persuade Jinnah to amicable settle all outstanding points with Congress.

1996 – Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan PM, gives a green signal for opening up trade with India.

2004 – Tamil is established as a Classical language.

2014 – Telecom company Vodafone reports that certain nations allow authorities direct access to citizen communications data without a warrant; the company is prohibited from revealing the names of these nations.

2015 – Officials from India and Bangladesh sign the Land Boundary Agreement, permanently dividing disputed border territory between the two nations; residents of this territory lacked government-sponsored services and clear citizenship status.

2017 – Indian Arundhati Roy publishes her 2nd novel “The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness” 20 years after her first.

2018 – French man announced to have won France’s €1 million My Lottery for the second time in 2 years, with odds of 1 in 16 trillion.

1596 – Sikh Guru Har Govindji, the sixth Sikh guru. He fashioned a military role for the Sikhs.

1890 – Gopinath Bardoloi, architect of modern Assam, freedom fighter, and leader.

1929 – Sunil Dutt, legendary Bollywood film actor and Congress leader.  Acted in Milan, Reshma Aur Shera,  Yadein, Mother India,  Khandaan, Raaj Tilak, Parampara, Lage Raho Munna Bhai  etc. He won National Award once, Filmfare twice, BFTA and other awards.
