1586 – Sir Walter Raleigh brought the first tobacco to England from Virgi
nia.
1823 – The Döbereiner lighter process was invented by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner. He directed a fine jet of hydrogen over platinum powder in air. The platinum glowed white hot and ignited the hydrogen. Within two days, he incorporated this effect to make a useful lighter. (His lamp design was quickly taken up by manufacturers to replace flint and tinder for fire-starting. It remained in use for several decades, despite the invention of the safety match in 1848.
1866 – Cyrus W. Field finally succeeded, after two failures, in laying the first underwater telegraph cable : 1,686 miles long

1888 – The first U.S. electric automobile, designed by Philip W. Pratt, was demonstrated in Boston, a tricycle powered by six Electrical Accumulator Company cells, weighing 90 pounds.
1920 – Radio compass used for 1st time for aircraft navigation.
1921 – Insulin was isolated by Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best. It proved an effective treatment for diabetes.
1949 – Agreement reached on the ceasefire line in Kashmir, under PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s decesion to take the dispute to UNO. . But before that a large part (two-thirds) of Ja
mmu & Kashmir state was snatched away by Pakistani intruding armies. The areas called Pak Occupied Kashmir (POK) includes Gilgit, Baltistan, Aksai Chin. (Aksai Chin was later transferred to China by Pakistan under some clandestine agreement (map credit-bbc.com).
1987 – Explorers discovered the wreckage of the Titanic. The largest ever ship starting from Southampton, England to New York, had 2208 passangers and crew, sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. Over 1500 voyagers were reported dead.The cause was reported to be a collision with a large Glacier in the Ocean. (It is said the Captain Edward John Smith ignored early warnings by other ships passing him).
1994 – Parliament votes to ban tests for determining the sex of an unborn child, as these tests have resulted in thousands of aborted female fetuses.
1994 – Shooter Jaspal Rana won a Gold medal at the World Shooting Championships. Uttarkashi born Rana won 15 medals including 9 Golds in Asia, Commonwealth and other competitions. He was honoured with Arjuna, Dronacharya awards and Padma Shri. He coached shooter Manu Bhakar, who won 2 Olympic medals in 2024 Olympics and 23 medals in all, so far.
Born…. 1967 – Rahul Bose, rugby player turned actor, director and producer. Known for films like Everybody Says I Am Fine, Split Wide Open, Poorna, Courage Has No Limit, Dil Dhadkane Do, Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Kalpurush, Laptop, The Japanese Wife etc. he has won Filmfare TT award, some international recognition from Time magazine and Maxim naming him Seas Penn of Oriental Cinema for his films English, August, Mr & Mrs Iyer
1990 – Kriti Sanon, popular Bollywood actor who debuted in a Telugu action thriller 1. Nenokkadine and Heropanti, got excellent reviews and won Filmfare award on debut. Her films Bareili Ki Burfi, Luka Chuppi, Dilwale, Housefull 4, Mimi, Bhediya, Adipurush etc. were also great success. She won a National Award and 2 Filmfares apart from 3 nominations. she ranked among the Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 in 2019. RIP…. 1972 – Charu Majumdar, father of Naxalite Movement and the founder President of C.O.I.(M-L), died in prison.
1992 – Amjad Khan, famous film actor. Son of veteran actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan), Amjad is known for his role as Gabbar Singh, a dreadful decoit in the film Sholay released on August 15, 1975 by Ramesh Sippy. The film was a blockbuster due to its various strong factors like star cast with Sanjeev Kumar (as Thakur), Dharmendra-Amitabh (Jai-Veeru), Hema Malini (Vasanti), Jaya Bhaduri (Radha) and 
Asrani (Hitler-jailer). The story was a romance, comedy, drama and chasing a decoit in the wild. Amjad also acted in Des Pardes, Shatraj Ke Khiladi, Naastik, Satte Pe satta, Chambal Ki Kasam, Ganga Ki Kasam, Ham Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Naseeb etc. He also /directed produced some films.
2015 – Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, . He was a noted scientist and aerospace engineer. He is known as Missile Man of India. He also did the work of distributing n
ewspapers to continue his early education. Dr Abdul Kalam has the credit of making India’s first indigenous satellite (SLV III) missile as the project director in ISRO and DRDO. In July 1980, he placed the Rohini satellite near the Earth’s orbit. He made missiles like Agni and Prithvi with indigenous technology. He was credited with execution of India’s Pokhran -II Nuclear Tests on May 11 and 13, 1998 (5 Tests) under Atal Behari Vajpayee govt.
