1789 – French Revolution: Women of Paris march to Versailles to confront Louis XVI about his refusal to promulgate the decrees on the abolition of feudalism, demand bread, and have the King and his court moved to Paris.
1793 – French Revolution: Christianity is disestablished in France.
1864 – Most of Calcutta destroyed by cyclone (approx. 60,000 die).
1905 – Wilbur Wright pilots Wright Flyer III in a flight of 24 miles in 39 minutes, a world record that stood until 1908.
1914 – World War I; first aerial combat resulting in a kill. (World War I was the first time that aircraft were used on a large scale. Aeroplanes were just coming into military use at the outset of the war. Initially, they were used mostly for reconnaissance. Pilots and engineers learned from experience, leading to the development of many specialised types, including fighters, bombers, and ground-attack aeroplanes. While the impact of aircraft on the course of war was mainly tactical rather than strategic, most important being direct cooperation with ground forces {especially ranging and correcting artillery fire} the first steps in the strategic roles of aircraft in future wars was also foreshadowed).
1916 – Soldier Adolf Hitler is injured. (Private Henry Tandey, a British soldier serving near the French village of Marcoing, reportedly encounters a wounded German soldier and declines to shoot him, sparing the life of 29-year-old Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler).
1930 – British Airship R101 crashed in France en-route to India on its maiden voyage.
1947 – First Presidential address televised from White House- Harry Truman.
1986 – Israeli secret nuclear weapons were revealed. The British newspaper The Sunday Times ran Mordechai Vanunu’s story on its front page under the headline: ‘Revealed the secrets of Israel’s nuclear arsenal’.
1993 – CBI charge-sheeted 40 in Ayodhya case. Advani, Joshi and Bal Thackeray were among the accused.
1993 – Geet Sethi retained World Billiards title by beating Mike Russel.
1997 – Dr Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian woman to become an astronaut.
1997 – Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman police officer, was awarded the Joseph Beuys prize for her work in reforming the largest prison of the country.
2017 – “The New York Times” publishes investigation into sexual harassment behaviour by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
2020 – At least 14m tonnes of plastic pieces are at the bottom of the ocean, 30 times more than on the surface according to new research.

2021 – Russia launches an actor and director to the International Space Station to make the first film in orbit.

1864 – Louis Lumiere. A Frenh inventor, who worked with his brother Auguste to make pioneering motion-picture equipment. They improved upon Edison’s Kinetoscope by adding an intermittent film motion mechanism (based on sewing machine). Their first film show on 13 Feb 1895 to an invited audience was hugely successful. Their first public screening on 28 Dec 1895 in Paris was the ‘birth’ of the cinema.

1991 – Ramnath Goenka, journalist and founder chairman of the Indian Express Newspapers Group.
2011 – Steve Jobs, the visionary in the black turtleneck who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, built it into the world’s leading tech company and led a mobile-computing revolution with wildly popular devices such as the iPhone. Died at 56.
