Voting for 2 Rajya Sabha seats is scheduled for Oct. 04
Bhopal, Sep 19 (UNI) Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan will submit his nomination papers on Tuesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in a by-poll for a lone Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh and is likely to be elected unopposed as the main opposition Congress has announced that it will not field any nominee.
“Dr Murugan hails from Tamil Nadu, is that state’s BJP unit head, an advocate by profession, a member of a Scheduled Caste and has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He is scheduled to arrive here on Monday,” BJP Madhya Pradesh President VD Sharma told journalists on Sunday at the party office.
The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Mr Thaawarchand Gehlot (BJP) on July 7. He was made Karnataka Governor.
“The notification was issued on September 15, the last date for submission of documents is September 22, scrutiny is to take place the following day, the deadline for withdrawal of candidature expires on September 27 and voting – if required – will be conducted on October 4. Not a single set of nomination papers has been received till date,” Principal Secretary (Assembly) AP Singh said.
In the 230-strong Vidhan Sabha, the BJP has 125 members, Congress 95, Bahujan Samaj Party two and Samajwadi Party one. There are four independents while three seats are vacant.
Madhya Pradesh has a total 11 seats in the Council of States. At present, seven of them are occupied by BJP members and three by the Congress. Mr Gehlot’s term was to conclude on April 2, 2024.
