A bandh (strike) was called in Jalalabad, Punjab, on Saturday by the SBC OBC Dalit Maha Sangharsh Committee in protest against the desecration of the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Amritsar. The protest was fully supported by local residents, with all shops and commercial establishments in the area remaining closed. In addition to the shutdown, protestors successfully forced banks to close as well.
The incident of defamation of Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar has caused widespread outrage among Dalit and OBC communities, who consider the statue to be a symbol of pride and respect. The bandh in Jalalabad was a response to the growing demand for action against those responsible for the vandalism. Demonstrators gathered at key locations in the town to voice their anger and show solidarity with the cause.
The protestors have also demanded strict punishment for the culprits and the installation of additional security measures around statues of revered figures like Ambedkar. They emphasized that such acts of vandalism should not be tolerated and must be dealt with firmly by the authorities. The bandh saw active participation from people of all age groups, including students and workers, who stood together to express their dissent.
Local authorities have assured that they are investigating the incident and taking appropriate action. However, the protestors have vowed to continue their agitation until justice is served.
