My family is not running for WFI: Sharan Singh Brij
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is the only member of my family who will not be running for office in the WFI elections. “Today is the last day of nominations, and members from 22 state associations came to meet and are now going for filing their nominations,” said the host. “Today is the last day of nominations.” “There is not a single member of my family here,” stated Brij Bhushan.
NEW DELHI: The outgoing president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, stated on Monday that none of his relatives will run in the forthcoming elections for the national sports organisation. However, he reaffirmed that his organisation has the support of 22 state organisations.
In a meeting he convened on Sunday, BJP MP Brij Bhushan said that 22 of 25 state units had attended. He also said that “his candidates” for various posts in the federal elections on August 12 would be named on Monday.
On Monday, the final day of nominations for the WFI elections, Brij Bhushan paid a visit to the Indian Olympic Association office in this location.
“Today is the final day for nominations. Members from 22 state associations came to meet and are now proceeding with the nomination filing process. No one from my family is here, he declared.
Let the election take place first, and whoever wins will then go about their task.
Brij Bhushan, against whom the nation’s six top wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat, had levelled allegations of sexual harassment and sat in protest at Jantar Mantar, is ineligible to run because he has served as the federation’s head for 12 years, the maximum time period permitted by the National Sports Code.
Since Anurag Thakur, the sports minister, told the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar that no one from the family of the BJP politician would run for office, Brij Bhushan’s son Karan is also not a member of the electoral college.
In addition, the BJP leader’s son-in-law Vishal Singh, the president of the Bihar Wrestling Federation, who was generally expected to succeed him in the top WFI position, would not run in any of the top elections on August 12.
Rivals who apparently held their own parallel conference at a different location in the national capital could challenge Brij Bhushan’s nominees.
Assam, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh state units allegedly attended the meeting.
