Novak Djokovic skips Toronto tournament to relax after Wimbledon loss
Following his defeat in the Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic has decided to skip the Toronto event in order to get additional recuperation. It was confirmed by Tennis Canada that Novak Djokovic would not be participating in the lone stop in Canada on the ATP Tour calendar owing to exhaustion.
TORONTO: Novak Djokovic withdrew from the National Bank Open on Sunday in favour of more recovery following his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic withdrew from the lone ATP Tour stop in Canada, according to Tennis Canada, citing exhaustion. After losing last Sunday’s five-set Wimbledon final to top-ranked Alcaraz, the 36-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam champion was ready to start his hard-court preparations for the U.S. Open.
Djokovic, who has won the National Bank Open four times, said, “I have always liked my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the correct decision to take.
“I appreciate Karl Hale, the tournament director, for being understanding of this choice. I sincerely hope to visit Toronto and Canada again in the upcoming years so I may play in front of the amazing fans there.
Djokovic’s replacement, American Christopher Eubanks, will receive automatic entrance into the main event. Eubanks recently completed an unexpected Wimbledon quarterfinal run, defeating No. 12 seed Cam Norrie and No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to the final eight.
Hale added, “Of course, we’re unhappy that Novak won’t be competing in the National Bank Open this year. He is a fantastic player, and we know that Sobeys Stadium spectators were anxious to see him play.
