New Delhi: Hindu groups have announced that they will proceed with their “shobha yatra” in the Nuh district of Haryana today, despite the fact that the government have denied permission for any protest in the communally sensitive district.
On July 31, crowds stormed a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) parade in the predominantly Muslim area of Nuh, which led to the outbreak of violent riots that resulted in the deaths of six persons. Three people were killed in total, including two home guards and a cleric.

As a direct result of the disobedience, the government of Haryana has increased the level of security in the area by stationing 1,900 Haryana Police officers and 24 companies of paramilitary forces at the inter-state and inter-district boundaries.

The state administration decided not to provide authorization for the yatra because of a meeting of the G20 Sherpa Group that was scheduled to take place in Nuh from September 3 to September 7, as well as the necessity to keep the peace and order after the violence that occurred on July 31.

In the sake of public safety, prohibitory orders have been strictly enforced throughout the district. Visitors from outside the country are not permitted entry, educational institutions and banks have been shut down, and mobile internet and bulk SMS services have been halted. In the neighbourhood that was the scene of communal conflicts in July, it is now illegal for groups of four or more persons to get together.

At the Sohna toll in Gurugram, police officers are performing comprehensive checks on the vehicles that pass through there. As part of the administration’s measures to ensure everyone’s safety, the Haryana Police are stopping and searching each and every car that goes through the toll plaza.

Following the disruption that was caused by communal violence in July, the “Sarv Jatiya Hindu Mahapanchayat” issued a plea on August 13 for a resumption of the yatra today.

On Sunday, the Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, encouraged residents to pay a visit to one of the neighbouring temples in order to say their prayers rather than taking part in the parade that had been denied permission by the local authorities.

The Hindu calendar identifies Monday, August 28 as the final day of the month of Shravan, which is considered a sacred month.

“Instead of going on a ‘yatra,’ people can go to temples in their local communities to perform a ‘jalabhishek,'” stated Chief Minister Khattar.
