Ongole, AP, May 24 (UNI) The 8th Additional Session court Judge M Manohar Reddy here on Monday awarded death sentence to 12 notorious criminals and convicted seven others to life imprisonment.
The court awarded the capital punishment to 12 members notorious gang including the gang leader Abdul Sammad alias Munna in three offences.
According to prosecution the 12 member gang, during 2008, killed several lorry drivers and cleaners on Chennai-Kolkata highway in Prakasham district. They used to sell the goods in the lorry. Later the gang used to dismantle the lorries at Maddipadu village and sell them as scrap.
The modus operandi of the gang that the main accused Abdul Sammad used to pose as police officer and stopped the lorries. The gang members used to attack the driver and cleaner of the lorry, kill them and bury them at nearby isolated areas. The gang buried the bodies of drivers and cleaners at various places after they killed them.
The police exhumed the bodies during investigation. The police said that the gang killed 13 lorry drivers and cleaners and 22 cases had been registered against the gang.
In the year 2008, on receiving a complaint from a lorry owner Veerappan Muppu Swamy, the then Ongole town police station S I M Lakshman registered a case. The then prakasam district Superintendent of Police V Vinaychand formed special teams to investigate the serial killings and personally monitored the investigation. The court awarded death sentence and life imprisonment to the 19 accused in three heinous crimes.
