1296 – Allau’d-din Khilji declared himself as King of Delhi after assassinating
Jalal’ud-din Khalji. He is known for having brought in many military reforms.
1763 – Mir Kasim was defeated in the ‘Katwa’ battle by the British.
1843 – The S.S. Great Britain, the world’s first iron-hulled steamship was launched to cross the Atlantic (1845). From being a luxury liner, it later became a ferry carrying troops to the Crimea and India, then a cargo ship, finally abandoned in the Falkland Islands following storm damage
(1886).
1877 – 1st Wimbledon Mens Tennis: Spencer W Gore beats Marshall with scores

1900 – The Métropolitan subway (Métro) in Paris opened the first eight stations on its first line running east-west through the centre of the city. Within two months the total number of stations became 18.

P Scholz is 1st surgeon to use fiberglass and plastics in surgeries.
1949 – Raja of Tehri Garhwal announces merger with Indian Union.
1961 – 1st in-flight movie shown, TWA.

– Indian Government under PM Indira Gandhi, nationalised 14 major commercial banks of India through an Ordinance by the President.
1974 – Ashes of revolutionary Shaheed Udham Singh, brought to Delhi from London. He was a member of Ghadar Party and assassinated former Governor of Punjan Michel O’Dwyer.
1987 – Rajiv Gandhi, Congress President and Prime Minister, expels V.P. Singh from Congress and orders probe into Ajitabh Bachhan’s property abroad. Later VP Singh broke the Rajiv Gandhi govt. and formed United Front govt. with other splinter groups of Left, JDU, RJD, CPI (M) etc. His govt. was rocked by Mandal Commission agitations and widespread violence.
1994 – The Tamil Nadu Bill for continuance of the 69% reservation policy in the state receives th
e President’s assent.
2000 – The Centre has no locus standi in Thackeray case, says the Prime Minister Vajpayee and rejects the resignations of Shiv Sena nominees in the Union Cabinet– Manohar Joshi, Suresh Prabhu and Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil stayed in the Union Cabinet.
2009 – The Wesley Impact: black spot the size of Earth is discovered on Jupiter after unknown object crashes onto the planet.
2017 – US scientists calculate the total amount of plastic ever produced: 8.3 billion tonnes, equal to the weight of One billion elephants.
2018 -Knesset-the Israel’s Parliament passes controversial “Nation state” law giving only Jews self-determination, relegating the Arabic to “special status”.
Born…. 1827 – Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier who played a key part in the events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was a sepoy (infantryman) in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) regiment of the British
East India Company. In 1984, the Indian government issued a postage stamp to remember him. His life and actions have also been portrayed in several cinematic productions.

5 – Roger Biiny (Michael Humphery Binny), Indian medium-pacer, all-rounder in early 1980s. He was the highest wicket-taker during 1983 -85 World Cups. Binny was the President of BCCI, (Oct. 2022 to Sept. 2025). He was earlier National Selector, President of Karnataka State Cricket Association and Coach for India’s Under-19 team in 2000.
1961 – Harsha Bhogle, journalist, famous sports commentator. He has also conducted varios TV shows and authored several books viz., Hat Trick, Two Nations: One Obsession, Champi
ons League Twenty-20 Championship Trophy, 2007 ICC World Cup Twenty20 etc.
RIP…. 1968 – Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad, he was the last ruler Maharaja of Baroda. He founded the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1949, as per the wishes of his grandfather.
1982 – Mira Behn, disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. ( Madeleine Slade), a Brtsh citizen who supported India’s Freedom Struggle and came to India in 1920s, became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi’s Ahimsa and peaceful Disobedience (pic credit-telgraphindia.com).
You may have known…. As per the classification of Food and Agriculture Organization, the rivers systems in India are combined into 20 river units, which includes 14 major rivers systems and 99 smaller river basins grouped into six river units. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin is the largest, which covers 34% of
the land area and contributes to nearly 59% of the available water resources.
