1818 – The first transfusion in Great Britain using human blood (as opposed to animal blood) took place in London. Using an instrument of his own design, Dr. James Blundell transfused between 12 to 14 ounces of donated human bl
ood into a vein in the patient’s arm. For 30 or 40 minutes, there seemed to be benefit, as his pulse and body temperature increased. However, he died 56 hours after the treatment. Ten years later, Dr. Blundell saved a patient’s life with a blood transfusion, but by then, Dr. Doubleday had already, in 1825, become the first to achieve a life-saving success (pic credit- John Cochran for commons.wikimedia.org).
1905 – Albert Einstein published the first article on the special Theory of Relativity.
1931 – At Lancashire, MK Gandhi sees textile workers hurt by Indian boycott but says spinning must go on in India.
1938 – Hitler issues ultimatum to Czech government, demanding Sudenten Land.
1959 – Japan hit by Typhoon Vera; about 5,000 persons die.
1960 – Fidel Castro of Cuba gives a very long speech at the United Nations, 4 hours, 29 minutes. Though the longest speech ever given to the UN was delivered in 1957 by the Indian politician VK Krishna Menon, who talked for nearly 8 hours while defending India’s position on Kashmir. 1975 – Notification to pay equal payment to both men and women workers was promulgated in India.
1975 – Co
nstitution (39th Amendment) Bill 1975, placing election of the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Lok Sabha beyond the scrutiny of the judiciary, approved by Parliament.
1979 – Ch. Charan Singh launches a new party alongwith his protege Raj Narain, called it Lok Dal, coming out of Janata Party, and staked claim for PM’s post.
1985 -Indian athlete P.T. Usha sets record for 100m (Women) in 11.39 seconds at the 6th Asian Track and Field Championship in Jakarta and winning 5 Gold medals in different events..
1991 – Four men and four women entered the Biosphere 2, an airtight, self-contained structure in Oracle, Arizona, where they would live for two years. The 7,200,000-cu-ft sealed glass and space-frame structure contained 5 biomes, including a 900,000-gallon ocean, a rain forest, a desert, agricultural areas, and a human habitat. Biosphere 2 was designed as a replica of Earth’s environment. During their stay, the crew experienced various problems. Limited agricultural productivity restricted their diet. Microorganisms in the soil reduced oxygen levels in the atmosphere and added nitrous oxide. The crew emerged on 26 Sep 1993. Unfortunately, the problems with the project’s results brought scientific disdain.
1996 – PM Deve Gowda, PM, takes oath as Rajya Sabha member. He was the first 
Prime Minister to enter Parliament through RS. (Indira Gandhi was already a RS member when elected leader in 1966) and became the PM, after Shastri ji’s death.
Born…. 1921 – Subedar Joginder Singh PVC (1962). Awarded Param Vir 
Chakra, the highest military honour, posthumously for bravery during 1962 Sino-India war on NEFA (North Eastern Frontier Agency). alongwith Sikh Regiment -1, killying 50 Chinese soldiers and repelling from his post. He also had also served across Srinagar Front during 1947-48.
1923 – Dev Anand, logendary romantic film Hero, producer, director. Born in Shakargarh tehsil of Ferozepur (now in Pakistan), as Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand started his cine career with Ham Ek Hain, Ziddi and followed up with Kala Pani, Kal Bazar, Jewel Thief, Taxi Driver, Baazi, Ham Dono, CID, Paying Guest, Jab Pyar Kisi se Hota Hai, asli Naqli, Johney Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Des Pardes, Heera Panna, Warrant, 
Jaaneman, Guide etc. as Hero over 100 films. He was awarded Padma Bhushan (1987) and Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2002. His elder brother Chetan Anand and younger one Vijay Anand were also popular actors, directors. (pic credit-nationalherald.com).
1932 – Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister. An economist who served as RBI governor, World Bank Director and Minister of Finance in PV Narasimha Rao Govt.(1991-96). He is credited with liberalisation of Indian ecenomy. He represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha 5 times and Rajasthan once. He lost a Lok Sabha poll from South Delhi in 1999, lost to BJP stalwart Vijay Kumar Malhotra (his Party lost all 7 seats from Delhi).
1962 – Chunky Pandey, Bollywood actor who did some films like aag Hi aag, Paak Ki Duniya, Don, Tezaab, Khatron K
a Khiladi, Housefull-2 and 4. He was nominated to Filmfare 3 times and was awarded Doctorate by Invertis Unversity in 2021.
1981- Serena Jameka Williams, an American professional tennis 
player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women’s singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks. She is one of the highest paid sportswoman and has a net worth of $ 300 million (pic credit-britannica.com).
RIP…. 1956 – Laxmanrao Kirloskar, who rose from a school master to a great social re
former, industrialist, patriot and founder of the Kirloskar Industries. His company today exports farm equiment to over 70 countries, employs 18,000 workers and has a net worth of $ 1.85 billion.
1977 – Uday Shankar (Chowdhury), producer and director of dance-based film ‘Kalpana’. His main achievement was the blending of the Indian classical style with the Western Ballet and various folk dances. (He was the elder brother of legendary music maestro Pandit Ravishankar).
You may have known…. The level of women’s education in India witnessed a sharp rise between 2001 and 2011, with 116% more women passing out as graduates or above compared to a just 65% increase among men. They are now a significant contributors to nation’s growth, joining armed forces and policy makers.
