1960 – An ejected space capsule from Discoverer 13 was recovered when it retu

2000 – Parliament approves the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill to create a hilly state of Uttaranchal.

3 – The first marriage in space happened when Russian bride Ekaterina Dmitriev stood on the ground in Texas, (USA) and married her husband Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, orbiting in the International Space Station (pic credit-africaeagle.com).
2017 – 100 year-old fruit cake by Huntley & Palmers deemed “almost eatable” after being di

2018 – Evidence of one million Uighurs being held in “counter-e
xtremism centers” in China is presented to the UN Committee on Human Rights.
2019 – Monsoon flooding in southern and western India kills at least 150 with 40 dead in Kerala state and 100,000 in emergency relief camp.
2019 – Financier Jeffrey Epstein is found dead of an apparent suicide in his jail cell 
in New York while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges. He is alleged to have had links with former President Bill Clinton (pic credit-www.independent.co.uk).
Born…. 1860 – Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the great architect of the renaissance of Hindustani music and who played a vital role in giving re-birth to North Indian classical music (more details given in August 09 issue-by error).
1894 – Varahagiri Venkata Giri, the fourth President of India from August 24, 1969 to August 24, 1974. After returning to India from Ireland after completing his Degree in Law, in 1916, VV Giri became 
a part of the ongoing movement of workers. Although his political journey began while studying in Ireland, he became active for full independence by becoming a part of the ‘Indian Freedom Struggle’. In 1969 he defeated the officialo Congress candidate Neelam Sanjiva Reddy becuase of ‘Call for Conscience’ by then PM Indira Gandhi. Reddy was supposed to be closer to old Congressmen, called ‘Syndicate’. Later in 1975, V V Giri was awarded the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his outstanding contribution to the upliftment of workers and the 
freedom struggle of the country.
1934- P L Raj (Devraj Peter Lewis) was an Indian choreographer who worked in the 1960s-80s. His famous films were Howrah Bridge, Junglee, Professor, Teesri Majil, Inteqam, Sholey, Don, Sargam Saagar, Ek Duje Ke Liye etc. He also worked in Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Punjabi films.
1963 – Phoolan Devi, an Indian politician who turned rebel MP. She was born in a lower class in a small village of Gorham in Uttar Pradesh to a mallah in Purva. Phoolan was locked up in a room in a house in Behmai village. She was beaten, raped, and humiliated by several men over a period of three weeks. They made her walk around the village naked. She managed to escape from this three-week imprisonment. After being in jail for eleven years without trial, Phoolan was released in 1994. This happened at a time when Dalit p
eople were rallying in support of Phoolan and Phoolan was seen as a symbol of this community. Phoolan converted to Buddhism upon er release. She won the (Lok Sabha) election from the Mirzapur seat in UP.
RIP…. 1986 – General A.S. Vaidya, who was Chief of Army Staff, at the time of ‘Operation Blue Star’. Was shot dead at Pune. (detailed post published on August 09 – by Error).
1999 – Padma Bhushan Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya, Eminent Sanskrit Scholar in
India (published on Aug. 09- by Error).
You may have known…. Cannibalism and Necromancy – The Aghori way of life, Banaras: The formidable Aghori Sadhus of Banaras (Varanasi) are easily recognisable in their long, matted hair and bodies smeared in ash. Their way of connecting to God is, very subtly put, off-beat. These 
monistic saints believe in renouncing the world by finding ‘ purity in the filthiest.’ This leads them to eat human remains after cremation and have intercourse with corpses. They are believed to be possess tantrik powers of healing.
