1612 – In the battle of Surat, (India): English navy fleet beats Portuguese. 
1866 – A public demonstration was given of the first cog railway. It was an engineering marvel, a new technology of toothed cog gears, rack rails and tilted boilers.
1885 – Boxing’s 1st heavyweight title fight with 3-oz gloves and 3-minute rounds fought between John L Sullivan and Dominick McCaffrey (pic credit-britannica.com).
1959 – India sends troops to Tibet border to block the Chinese. This led to a full fledged attack on India by the Chinese in 1962 and bad defeat.
1962 – President John F Kennedy promised to look at harmful effects of DDT. Eventually, in 1972, DDT was banned in the US. DDT is still used in India, but its use is highly restricted and primarily limited to public health efforts to control vector-borne disease
s like malaria. Agricultural use was banned in 1972. India is the only country still manufacturing the pesticide and opposed the proposal to commit to a deadline on a worldwide ban on pesticide DDT by 2020.
1974 – Lokdal Party established under the presidency of Chaudhary Charan Singh. It was later merged in the Janata Party in 1977 and came to power under Morarji Desai’s prime ministership. He became the Prime Minister of India for a brief period in from July 1979- January 1980.

1965 – Astronaut Gordon Cooper in orbit 100 miles above the Earth aboard Gemini-5, held a conversation with aquanaut M. Scott Carpenter in Sealab II which was 205 feet below the su
rface of the Pacific Ocean. It was first time an astronaut in space spoke with an aquanaut.
1990 – Saddam Hussein declares America can’t beat Iraq. But he was later captured by American troops on December 13, 2003 and hanged on Dec. 30, 2006.
1991 – Second operational Indian Remote Sensing satellite (IRS-1B) launched by a Russian launch vehicle, Vostok. It is still in service. (pic credit-ISRO archives).
1993 – Tamil refugees leave Madras for Sri Lanka apparently on their own free will.
1997 – Netflix is founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in Scotts Valley, California, as an online DVD rental business.
He is remembered as, Hockey Ka Jadoogar, for skillfull dribbling of the ball. He represented India in 1928, -32. -36 Olympics and is credited to have trained hundreds of young players until 1964. He scored over 1000 hockey international goals during his playig tenure. He was offered German citizenship by Chancellor Adolf Hitler in 1936 for having scored 4 out of 8 goals in Olympic Final, defeatimg German team 8-1. He was offered Colonel’s rank but he refused politely, saying “I am Proud of being an Indian!’ He was head coach in National Institue of Sports, Patiala and was awarded Padma Bhushan; his birthday being called National Sports Day and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award instituted to pay tribute to the Mohammed Ali of Hockey (as called by BBC). Govt of India declared 29 August as National Sports Day in 1995. (we regret having put up this post in August 28 issue by mistake.)1915 – Ingrid Bergman. iconic Swedish actress who acted in films for about 5 decades. She starred in Casablanca, Intermezzo, Jone of Arc, For whom the Bell rocks, Gaslight, bellbound, Notorius, Under Capricron etc. Also
known for her many affairs, she won 3 Academy awards, 4 Golden Globe, 2 BAFTA, 3 Primetime Emmy , a Tony award and many other film accolades.
1926 – Ramkrishna Hegde, Karnataka politician, three times Chief Minister of the state between 1983-88. Kashi Vidypeeth educated Hegde was Minister of State for Commerce in Union cabinet in 1998-99 under Atal Behari Vajpayee as PM . He was also a Rajya Sabha member twice. He is alleged to have had intimate relationship with classical dancer Pratibha Prahlad (36 years 
younger), had two twin sons out of this relationship in 1998 and three kids from his first marriage (pic credit-alchetron.com).
1929 – Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Separatist leader in J&K. Known for his strong pro-Pak speeches, he was member of Jamait-e Islami Kashmir and headed All Parties Huriayat Conference from 2004 till a year before his death 2021.
1932 – Mahmood Ali, legendary comic actor, director and producer. Second of the 8 siblings in the family of famous stage/film actress Momtaz Ali, he Acted in over 300 films, starting Kismet (1943) , Andaz Apna Apna, Do Bigha Zamin as child actor. He also acted in CID, Pyaasa, Chhoti Behn, 
Mian Biwi Raazi, Hawrah Bridge, Arzoo, Padosan, Nadan, Sanyasi, Fantoosh, Baarish, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Mein Sunder Hoon, Waaris, Paras, Vardaan, Dushman Diniya Ka, Ghar Bazar (1998) etc. He won 3 awards for Comedy roles and 15 nominations.
1958 – Michael Jackson, recording artist, song writer and King of Pop. Known for brilliant, soulful voice and breathtaking dance moves. He was a philanthropist as well. His Net worth $ 500 million.
