1604 – Guru Granth Sahib was established in the Golden Temple of Amritsar.

1783 – 1st hydrogen balloon flight (unmanned); reaches 900 m altitude.

1859 – “Colonel” Edwin L. Drake drilled the first successful oil well in the United States, near Titusville, Pennsylvania. The drilling had reached 69 feet 6 inches, when a dark film floating on the water below the derrick floor was noticed.

1870 – The Shramjeevi Sangh was established as India’s first labor organisation.

1939 -British  space engineer  Sir Frank Whittle and German  engineer Hans J.P. von Ohain invented a craft that became the first jet-powered airplane to fly. It remained airborne for seven minutes (pic credit-frankwhittle.co.uk).

1990 – The Cabinet Committee on political affairs decides to put a proposal before the Parliament providing five to ten per cent of Central Government jobs reserved for economically weaker sections.

1992 – The President issues two ordinances making it mandatory for new medical and dental colleges to obtain prior approval of the Medical and Dental Councils of India before their establishment.

1999 – India released Pakistani prisoners of war during the Kargil conflict.

Born….  1908 – Donald Bradman, great Australian cricketer, who  became the highest century maker  (29)  in  52 Tests  over years with an average of 99.94.  Sachin broke his record  when he scored 30th  Test Century 20 years later.

1931 – Sri Chinmoy (Kumar Ghose), Indian guru, better known as Sri Chinmoy, was an Indian spiritual leader who taught meditation in the United States after moving to New York City in 1964. Born in Boalkhali, Chittagon Distt. (now in Bangladesh),  began his spiritual journey at an age of 11 when he lost both his parents. He joined Sri Aurobindo Ashram, rose to  the position of  Personal Secy. to  the Ashram  General Secretary  Nolini Kanta Gupta and translated his books from Bengali to English. He was sponsored to  Unitede States by  Aurobindo US disciples. He started giving lectures  in spiritualism and  sangeet (flute and esraj),  Many musicians became his followers; like Carlos Sanatana,  Rolling Stone, John Meclauglin etc. releasing albums  Love Devotion and  Surrender etc. He had many  Ashrams world over; he  died in  New York in  Oct. 2007.

He was also an artist, sportsman  and   preacher of spirtualism,  Brahamcharya. He was  welcomed  by U Thant, Gen. secy.  United Nations, L Brezhnev  of  Russia, Motyer Teresa  and  others. He addressed  the Parliament of  World Religions in 1993, 2004. he was honoured worldwide with several awards on peace, spirutualism and  human values.

1972 – Dilip Singh Rana (Khali), popular Indian-American  WWF wrestler known as The Great  Khali,  born in  Sirmaur (H.P.) left his Punjab Police job in 2000  to enter  international  Freestyle Wrestling and  RAW  and became  2007 WWE Draft and later  won some competitions. He fought top  wrestlers Dolph Ziggler, defeated Randy Orton in 2017. He was includede in WWF Hall of Fame 2021. He has also participated in Bigg Boss and other TV show  like Commedy Nights, Kapil Sharma show and some film roles.  He joined BJP in 2023.

1980 – Neha Dhupia,  Kochi (Kerala)  born Punjabi  actress, model and beauty pageant titleholder. Her father  Commander Pratap Singh Dhupia  served  Indian Navy. She won the title of Femina Miss India in 2002 and represented India at Miss Universe 2002. She is primarily known for her work in Hindi and Telugu  films and television. She has actede in Julie, Sheesha, Chup Chup ke, Kya Kool Hain Hum,  Shootout at Lokhandawala,  Dus Kahaniyan, Ek Chalis Ki local Bus, Mithya. Singh in Kingg, Dasvidaniyan etc.

RIP…. 1976 – Mukesh Chand Mathur, popularly known simply as Mukesh, was a prominent playback singer of Hindi cinema. He got his first job as a playback singer in the 1945 film Pehli Nazar. The first song that Mukesh sang in a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De in which Motilal acted. The impact of Mukesh’s idol singer KL Sehgal is clearly visible in this song. In 1959, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer for the song ‘Sab Kuch Seekha Humne Na Seekhi Hoshiyari’ from the film Anari. In 1974, Mukesh received the National Film Award for the song “Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai” in the film Rajnigandha.

1979 – Admiral  Louis, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, last Viceroy of India, Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia,.   He and three companions, two of them children, killed by the IRA  (Britain’s) freedomfighter when his boat was blown up.

2006 – Hrishikesh Mukherjee,  Indian film director, editor and writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of Indian cinema who directed  or produced  very popular and successful films like  Guddi, Anand,  Satyakam,  Ashirvad, Annpurna, Anuradha,  Bawarchi,  Chupke Chupke,  Khubsoorat,  Abhimaan,  Mili, Alaap, Golmaal, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Manjhli Didi, Namak Haram, Jhooth Bole Kauva Kate, etc. and a TV Serial Talash.  He was Chairman of CBFC, NFDC. He won 8 Filmfare awrads, Padma Vibhushan in 2001 and Babasaheb Phalke Award in 1999.
