1854 – Postal stamp introduced in India, of denominations of half Anna and One anna.

1854 – The watch company founded in 1850 in Roxbury relocates to Waltham, Massachusetts, to become the Waltham Watch Company, a pioneer in the American System of Watch Manufacturing. (After observing the natural rhythm of daylight and dark, civilisations around the world looked for ways to measure time, first with calendars, then with instruments of increasing precision. First sundial: -1450 before JC in Egypt. Watches evolved in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks, which appeared as early as the 14th century. The first watches were strictly mechanical, driven by clockwork. As technology progressed, mechanical devices used to control the speed of the watch, were largely superseded by vibrating quartz crystals that produce accurately timed electronic pulses. Some watches use radio clock technology to regularly correct the time. The first digital electronic watch was developed in 1970).

1886 – Baluchisthan became a part of India. Sewa dynasty took  over in 1870s, while Rani Sewa was one of the famous rulers  of the state,  with Kalat Division. Earlier it was ruled by  Behrui Ahmedzai  and  Ahmed Shah Durrani.  Weakened by internal tribal fights, it  was defeated by the British in 1840s as well (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).

1932 – Indian Military Academy became functional with training for two and a half years.

1934 – Adolf Hitler expands German army & navy & creates an air force, violating Treaty of Versailles.

1953 – State of Andhra Pradesh partitioned from Madras Presidency.

1956 – The state of Karnataka was formed, merging all the Kannada-speaking regions of South India.

1967 – The Tourism Development Corporation of India was established, later renamed as  Indian Tourism Dev. Corpn.  (ITDC).

Born….  1847 – Annie Besant, famous educationist, philosopher, Freemason and thesophist. She was Women’s Rights activist and  supporter  of India’s  and Ireland’s  Self-rule. She  was member  of Theosophical  Society and founded several pro-Hindu,  Sindhi  organisations  and  critticised the  Christian  thoughts on  Women.  She co-founded  Benaras Hindu  University, Central Hindu School, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Central Hindu Girls School, Sri Pratap College and  was  elected as President  of Congress  in 1917. She was a prolific  orator, and wrote several books on Social  subjects.

1901 – Pratap Singh Kairon, a famous freedom fighter, former Chief Minister of Punjab, and a prominent leader. At that time Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were also under ‘Punjab’ (pic credit-commons.wikimedia.com).

1906 – SD Burman, popular  Indian singer and musician.  Coming from Tripura’s Royal family, he  composed many evergreen songs for Abhiman, Taxi Driver, Angare, Shikari,  Naya Zamana,  Manzil, Kala Bazar, Guide, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind, Aaradhana etc. He won 2 National Awards, 2 Filmfare, Sangeert Natak Akademy and several other accolades. Was awarded Padma Shri in 1969. His son RD Buram (Pancham) was also a very popular  Bollywood  singer (sketch credit-news18.com).

1919 – Noted Hindi film lyricist and poet Majrooh Sultanpuri. His poems  for films Dosti won his Dadasaheb Phakle award apart from Filmfare award and nominations for Talash, Pardesi, Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani etc.

1928 – Sivaji Ganesan, actor and producer. He was active in Tamil cinema during the latter half of the 20th century. He also acted Telugu, Malyalam and Hindi films. Sivaji Ganesan is acknowledged as one of the greatest Indian actors of all times and among the most imitated by other actors.

1945 – Ramnath Kovind,  14th President of India from 2017 – 2022.  Coming from a small village  (8 km) from Kanpur  (U.P.), he  attended  the  school  walking up to the City of Kanpur,  to complete his High School,  Law Degree and later passed the  IAS exam.  Yet he practiced as Delhi High Court and Supreme Court  lawyer,  joined Bhartiya Janta Party in 1991 and represented Rajya Sabha  (April 1994- March 2006) and  was appointed Governor of Bihar in 2015.  In 2017 he defeated Congress candidate Meira Kumar in Presidential contest. He has been  honoured woth several international awards. Post retirement  as President,  he heads the ‘One Nation, One Election’ panel which submitted an 18,000 page report in March 2024.

RIP….  1995 – Aditya Vikram Birla, famous industrialist.  Son of  Basant Kumat Birla, he inherited the family business in core industries like Aluminium, Cement, Textiles etc. He expanded his business to Egypt, Philipines and other South Eastern countriesand Southeast Asia, making him one of the first Indian manufacturers to go global. By 1995, his estimated net worth was £250 million. His younger son Kumar Mangalam Birla took over the leadership of his group of firms after his death at the age of 51  by   prostate cancer.

You may have known…. Long before anyone laughed out loud on the internet, “LOL” was in use by virtue of a different phrase: “Little Old Lady.”
