NEW DELHI: Schools in four districts of Jharkhand will remain closed on October 28 and 29 due to rainfall triggered by Cyclone Arnab, officials said on Wednesday. The district administrations of Ranchi, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Simdega have ordered the closure of schools in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

According to an official statement, all government, government-aided and private schools in Ranchi district will suspend academic activities for students from Kindergarten to Class 12 on both days.

The cyclone made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast early Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the system crossed the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very severe cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125–135 kmph and gusts reaching 150 kmph. The landfall process began at around 1:20 am.

Several districts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, West Singhbhum and East Singhbhum, have been experiencing intermittent rainfall since Tuesday night under the influence of the cyclone.

Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, said light rainfall had been reported in several parts of the state due to the accumulation of cyclonic clouds.

He said the major impact of the cyclone on Jharkhand was expected between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.
