Mohali (Punjab) : Newly appointed State Vice-President of the BJP Mahila Morcha (Punjab), Abha Bansal addressed the media Friday, and said, ” my work would be to focus on three priorities: women’s safety, economic strength and respect. She also said women caught in drug addiction must be rehabilitated and brought back into the mainstream.We will work on three subjects: safety, economic strength and respect for women,” Bansal told regional and national media. The press interaction took place on the day the BJP launched its 4,000-km Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra.
On the drug problem, she said chitta had ruined Punjab’s youth and that young women were also becoming addicted. “Even our girls are destroying themselves through addiction,” she said. She described freeing the state from drugs as the party’s first agenda. She criticised the AAP government’s Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign and called it a sham. “Yudh Nashian Virudh was only a drama,” she said, and alleged that “this game was played for four and a half years.” Bansal said safety was the biggest question facing women today. Domestic-violence cases that reach her are taken to the police and to bodies such as the Women’s Commission, and the woman concerned is given support, she said. She added that stricter laws with double or triple punishment for crimes against women would deter such crimes. On economic independence, she said women from financially weak households needed jobs so that they could support their children and families. The Amey Foundation, which she chairs, runs self-employment courses for women in beautician work, stitching and tailoring, and computers. She had a direct message for women kept at home by fear or unemployment: “Step out of your homes without fear.” Women must fight their own battles, she said, adding, “Nothing gets solved by sitting at home.”Bansal is known as a social worker in the Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula Tricity. She said her appointment to the Mahila Morcha post had been announced four days before the interaction.
