1893 – New Zealand became  the first country to grant women the right to vote.

1876 – Necessity mothers invention.  American inventor Melville (Reuben) Bissell received a U.S. patent for the carpet sweeper. (At his a crockery shop in Grand Rapids, Mich., his wife Anna’s health was affected by dust from the packing materials. From a desperate need for self-preservation, he invented the carpet sweeper).

1891 – William Shakespeare’s famous play “The Merchant of Venice” was first staged in Manchester (pic credit-thoughtco.com).

1893 – Swami Vivekananda gave a historic speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago (USA).

1950 – U. N. Assembly rejects Indian-Soviet proposal to admit Communist China.   In fact, India was offered  UNSC  membership  with Veto Power as P-5  group,  by  USA and USSR  but  our Prime Minister  Nehru   rejected the offer and  pressed for Communist China  as member of P-5 in Uited Nations in its place.  India was then  offered 6th position, but was  again declined by PM  Nehru.

1957 – The US conducted the first underground nuclear test in the desert of Nevada.

1965 – Chinese government extends ultimatum to India to dismantle forts within four days in China.

2000 – Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic Bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics. She did in Weightlifting  (110 kg +130 kg) She had  earlier won  Gold medals  in Asia and World Athletics. She  was awarded Arjuna Award,  Rajiv Gandhi, Khel Ratna, Padma Shri  and  several other honours.  She  is presently the Vice Chancellor of   Delhi Sports University since 2021.

2010 – At least 47 people die in northern India from heavy monsoon rains and landslides in Uttrakhand state, Pitthoragarh, Chapawat and Uttarkashi regions.

2014 – Crowds line up at retailers across the U.S. as the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are offered for sale; buyers are seeking to be some of the first to own the devices, which were shipped as late as November for those who pre-ordered online.   More crowd s are  seen today for iPhone18 launch  in NOIDA, Bombay and other centres. 

2019 – North America has lost 3 billion birds (29%) since 1970 according to analysis published in “Science”.

2022 – Scientists discover the site of the Amazon’s tallest tree, an angelim vermelho, which is 290 ft tall and 32 ft wide trunk, in Iratapuru River Nature Reserve, northern Brazil. Later more trees were discovered  in other jungles, the tallest being  Hyperion, Coast Redwood  (360  ft, 16 ft wide trunk) near California.

Born…. 1839 – George Cadbury, English businessman, Quaker, social reformer and chocolate manufacturer. He expanded his father’s  Quaker Tea,  Cocoa and  Chcocolate business in Britain and established a village  Bournville for  his workers. Today the brand has  global branches, manufacturing  and net worth is over GB Pound 4 Billion, though  family is  po[pular as great philanthropists and use little of their wealth.

1927 – Kunwar Narayan, counted among the respected poets of Hindi. His prestige extends to also as a poetic thinker with keen interest in many art forms. Kunwar Narayan is known in his creativity to see the present through history and myth. Hev wrote epics Atmajaye, (self-Conqurer),   Vajrashrava Ke Bahane, and many poetery collections  and  critical -analytics articles over 6 decades of his wrritings. He was honoured with Vyas Samman (1995),  Jnanpeeth award in 2005 and Padma Bhushan in 2006.

1933 – General Sunit Francis Rodrigues, former Indian Chief Army. He was later appointed Governor of Punjab  between 2004-10.

1958 – Lucky Ali (Maqsood Muhammed Ali) , famous singer son of  popular comedian  actor, director, producer Mehmood. He became famous with  a song in film Sholey and albums Suno, Sifr,  Aks etc.

1965 – Sunita Williams, the second woman of Indian origin to go to space through NASA. She has set a world record for 195 days in space as a female astronaut. She has so far made 2770 flights in 30 different spacecraft. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2008 in the field of science and engineering.

1976 – Isha Koppikar, model, for Coke, La O’real, Rexona,  Camay watches etc.  Bollywood  actor who worked in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi  and Kannada films viz., Ek Tha Dil, Ek Thi Dhadkan, Kadhai Kavidhai, Surya Vamsha, Fiza, Rahul, Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat Company, Dil Ka Rishta   etc.  She won Filmfare South on Debut in 1997 and Miss Talent Crown in Miss India Contest 1995.

1984 – Kavya Madhavan, popular Malayalam actress.  Started  as  a  child artist  in 1991  and  went  on to  play lead roles  in  South films  with Dilip,  Mohanlal, Manmoothy and other winning several Filmfare South and other Kerala, Tamil Nadu  state awards.,

RIP…. 1581 – Guru Ramdasji, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. He was the son-in-law of Amardas, the third Guru of the Sikhs. He founded a new city named ‘Amrit Sarovar’ in 1577 AD, which later became famous as Amritsar. Guru Ramdas had also started the excavation of the holy lake named ‘Satoshasar’. During the time of Guru Ramdas, people started taking donations or donations for the ‘Guru’. Due to this, the throne of the Guru had received enough money from the people. He was a man of great sage nature. Because of this, Emperor Akbar also respected him. At the behest of Guru Ramdas, Akbar did not take rent from Punjab for a year.

You may have known…. Irrigation serves as a consistent source of water for farms, particularly in regions where rainfall is erratic. It enables farmers to increase food production, even in arid regions, thereby bolstering India’s agricultural resilience. Currently, approximately 55% of India’s farmland is irrigated, and this figure is on the rise due to government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).
