Delhi-NCR likely to receive more rain over next three days; IMD issues yellow alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Delhi-NCR over the next three days and issued a yellow alert, warning of moderate to heavy showers in parts of the national capital.
Residents woke up to pleasant weather on Friday as cool winds and light rain provided relief from the humid conditions experienced earlier in the week. According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue over the weekend across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The weather department has also flagged a low to moderate risk of flash flooding in a few watersheds and low-lying areas during the next 24 hours.
The latest forecast comes a day after widespread rainfall lashed Delhi and adjoining regions, triggering waterlogging and traffic disruptions at several locations. Persistent showers on Thursday led to a sharp fall in temperatures, making it one of the coolest days of the season so far.
According to IMD data, Delhi’s maximum temperature settled at 27.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, down 6.6 degrees from the previous day’s 32.6 degrees Celsius and significantly below the seasonal normal of 34.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius, leaving a difference of just 2 degrees Celsius between the day’s maximum and minimum temperatures.
Heavy rain began early on Thursday, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert. Among the city’s monitoring stations, Lodhi Road recorded the highest rainfall at 60.4 mm, followed by Safdarjung with 56 mm and Delhi Ridge with 54.4 mm. The IMD classifies rainfall between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm as moderate.
The rainfall led to waterlogging in several parts of the capital. The Public Works Department (PWD) received complaints from Press Enclave Marg, Defence Colony, Kanjhawala and Palla, while water accumulation was also reported in parts of Karkardooma, Saraswati Vihar in Pitampura and several stretches of Dwarka, affecting traffic movement.
In neighbouring Gurugram, the police on Thursday advised corporate offices and private establishments to allow employees to work from home to ease traffic congestion and ensure smoother movement of emergency services amid the heavy rainfall.
