Chandigarh : The Chandigarh administration has officially declared a holiday on Ambedkar Jayanti, ensuring that all government offices and factories remain closed on this significant occasion. The decision was announced to honor the contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice. Additionally, the administration has confirmed that Buddha Purnima will also be observed as a public holiday.
The order applies to all government departments, public sector undertakings, and industrial establishments under the jurisdiction of Chandigarh. Private businesses and educational institutions may also choose to follow the directive, though it is not mandatory for them. The move has been widely appreciated by various social and political organizations that had been advocating for recognition of Ambedkar Jayanti as an official holiday.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a key figure in India’s fight against caste discrimination, has a strong following across the country. His contributions to social reforms and the legal framework of India have been widely acknowledged. Ambedkar Jayanti, celebrated on April 14, sees nationwide tributes, with people paying their respects through cultural programs, seminars, and public gatherings. The Chandigarh administration’s decision reflects a growing trend among Indian states to formally recognize this day.
Along with Ambedkar Jayanti, the administration has also included Buddha Purnima in the official holiday list. Buddha Purnima, which marks the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of Lord Buddha, is widely celebrated by the Buddhist community and followers of his teachings. The declaration of both holidays has been seen as a step toward promoting inclusivity and acknowledging the contributions of great leaders in shaping Indian society.
Officials have clarified that essential services such as hospitals, emergency response teams, and law enforcement will continue to function as usual on both holidays. Public transport services are also expected to operate with limited schedules. Citizens have welcomed the move, with many expressing their support on social media and emphasizing the importance of remembering the legacies of such influential figures.
With the official notification now in place, government employees and factory workers can look forward to observing Ambedkar Jayanti and Buddha Purnima with due respect and participation in various commemorative events.
