Chandigarh : A shocking incident has emerged from Kajheri village in Chandigarh, where the local welfare committee has imposed strict regulations on migrants residing in the area. The committee has put up posters across the village listing 11 rules, including prohibiting migrants from standing on balconies or streets. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in police action, and in an extreme measure, the cancellation of their Aadhaar cards.

The sudden enforcement of such rules has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike. Migrants living in the village expressed distress, stating that such regulations were discriminatory and unfair. Some have questioned the legality of these restrictions, arguing that they violate fundamental rights granted under the Indian Constitution. The move has sparked debates on social media, with many calling it an authoritarian decision reminiscent of medieval rules.

Interestingly, the Chandigarh police have distanced themselves from the matter, claiming they were unaware of any such directives issued by the local welfare committee. A senior police official stated that no legal authority allows a village committee to impose such restrictions or take action against Aadhaar cards. The police have assured that they will investigate the issue and take appropriate steps to ensure no illegal enforcement occurs.

Legal experts have also weighed in on the matter, calling the restrictions unconstitutional. They emphasized that no local body has the authority to dictate where a person can stand or move freely, as long as they are not violating any laws. Any attempt to enforce such rules could lead to legal action against those responsible.

Meanwhile, human rights activists and social organizations have condemned the act, urging authorities to intervene. Some activists are considering filing a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to ensure that migrants are not subjected to unlawful discrimination.

As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Chandigarh administration will take strict action against those imposing such rules. With growing public outrage and media attention, the pressure is mounting on authorities to respond decisively. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants in urban and semi-urban areas, where local bodies sometimes impose arbitrary rules without legal backing.
