Chandigarh : In a significant ruling, a special CBI court in Chandigarh has sentenced a former CBI inspector to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a case related to illegal possession of a car. Along with the jail term, the court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the former officer, marking a stern warning against the misuse of official position and authority.

The case goes back several years when the ex-inspector was accused of seizing a car during an investigation and later using it for personal benefit without following proper procedures. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a case against him after it was revealed that the officer had failed to return the vehicle to its rightful owner and instead misused his authority to keep it for himself.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that clearly showed the former inspector had not only taken the car under the pretext of investigation but had also used forged documents to claim ownership. The court found the arguments convincing and observed that such actions from a law enforcement officer were not only illegal but also a serious breach of public trust.

The judge remarked that the misuse of power by someone entrusted with upholding the law cannot be taken lightly. The sentencing aimed to serve as a deterrent to other officials who might be tempted to misuse their positions. The court’s decision highlighted the importance of integrity and accountability in the functioning of investigative agencies like the CBI.

Family members of the car’s original owner expressed relief and said justice had finally been served after a long legal battle. The CBI welcomed the court’s verdict and reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency and rooting out corruption from within its ranks. It also reassured the public that any officer found indulging in illegal activities would face strict legal consequences, regardless of rank or influence.

The former inspector has the option to appeal the decision in a higher court, but as of now, he remains in judicial custody. The judgment has been seen as a strong step towards ensuring that law enforcement agencies remain free from internal corruption and that no officer is above the law.
