France threatens retaliation if Niger attacks its interests.
France has threatened to take retaliatory action in the event that its interests are targeted in Niger. They also asked that the local authorities protect the building and condemned the violence that broke out near their embassy in Niger, which is the country where a military junta took power this week in a coup.
After demonstrators attempted to enter its embassy in the nation’s capital, Niamey, France on Sunday warned that it would respond violently if its citizens were attacked there.
French President Emmanuel Macron “will not tolerate any attack against France and its interests,” the French president’s office stated in a statement. “Should anyone attack French nationals, the army, diplomats, and French interests, they will see France respond in an immediate and intractable manner.”
They also requested that local authorities safeguard the premises and denounced the violence that broke out in the area of its embassy in Niger, where a junta took over this week.
The French foreign ministry condemned “all violence against diplomatic missions” and stated that “Nigerian forces have an obligation to ensure the security of our diplomatic missions and consulates as part of the Vienna convention.”
“We demand that they fulfil this obligation right away.” After Paris discontinued funding, thousands of junta sympathisers gathered outside the French embassy in Niamey, the capital of Niger, with some attempting to enter the structure.
As the West African regional group ECOWAS prepared to tackle the Niger coup during a summit in Nigeria, Macron’s office stated that “France also supports all regional initiatives” aimed at “restoring constitutional order” and the return of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum.
