1817 – 1st sword swallower performance in U.S. (New York City).

1837 – The first U.S. patent for a silk figure power loom was issued to William Crompton. The figure or pattern of the cloth was made on a chain.

1839 – Cyclone slams south eastern India with high winds and a 40 foot storm surge, destroying city of Coringa. Storm waves sweep inland, destroying 20,000 ships and killing an estimated 300,000 people.

1867 – Alfred Nobel patents dynamite.

1884 – The first U.S. patent for the process of evaporated milk was issued to John Meyenberg, a Swiss immigrant. Gail Borden had already been marketing condensed milk, but that was sweetened as part of the preserving process. Evaporated milk is not sweetened, and has up to 75% of the water removed from the cow’s milk.

1922 – Archaeologist Howard Carter opened the first of two doorways to the tomb of King Tutankamun. In his diary, Carter recorded, “Noted seals. … Opened the first doorway; which comprised rough stones built up from the threshold to the lintel, plastered over on the outside face, and covered with numerous impressions from various seals of Tut.ankh.Amen and the Royal Necropolis seal. … As we cleared the passage we found mixed with the rubble broken potsherds, jar seals, and numerous fragments… These were disturbing elements as they pointed towards plundering.”

1975 – The first U.S. patent for a whole-body X-ray scanner was issued to Robert S. Ledley.

2020 – Dead and buried mink reported rising from the ground due to bloating, after a hurried cull of millions of COVID-19 infected animals in Denmark.

2021 – India has more girls than boys for the first time in its history and its population boom is ending, according to new government survey.
