TUMAKURU:

Noorunnisa, a senior civil judge and member secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, went to the Mallenahalli Gollarahatti hamlet on Thursday where a month-old baby girl had passed away from medical difficulties.

As is customary in the Kadugolla community, the infant and mother, Vasantha, were both placed in a tent in a field far from their hamlet. The mother was denied access to her home in the hamlet even after the baby died because she was deemed to be “impure” by the neighbourhood.

They think her presence would provoke the wrath of their gods.Vasantha was visited by the judge in the temporary shelter, who then took her back to the hamlet (or “hatti”) and transferred her to the district general hospital for more care. She called a conference with the locals and told them the law forbade them from continuing these traditions. Additionally, the pitched tent was destroyed.

The Bellavi primary health center’s rooms, medicine storage room and lavatory were also visited by the judge, who issued a warning about the need of maintaining hospital hygiene.
