Will clear entire legacy waste at Jhuriwala by February 25: Panchkula MC
Garbage dumped at Sector 23 site to be processed by March 21, NGT told
Panchkula: The local MC has claimed to complete processing of the legacy waste at the Jhuriwala dumping ground and the garbage at the Sector 23 site by February 25 and March 21 this year, respectively.
The MC stated this in a report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in connection with an appeal filed with the tribunal by one Sanjay Kumar against the Union of India and others over alleged unscientific dumping of waste at the Jhuriwala site, which is close to the wildlife sanctuary, in violation of the environmental norms.
In the appeal filed in the year 2022, Kumar stated that the Jhuriwal dumping site was situated at 140 m from a wildlife sanctuary. The site, which was supposed to be used for a solid waste management plant, was being illegally used for dumping of waste, he added.
The MC, in its compliance report, stated that it expected to process the entire waste at Jhuriwala by February 25.
The MC said it processed an average 1,018.73 metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste per day (based on the last month’s data) at the Jhuriwala dumping site. It said it was currently processing 2,100 MT of waste per day, and is expected to process the entire legacy waste by February 25. The MC has processed as much as 59,961.01 MT of the total 90,837 MT waste from December 3 last year to February 11.
The local body has also processed an average 2,168.49 MT of waste per day (as per last month’s data) at the Sector 23 dumping site. It is currently processing 3,200 MT per day. As much as 1,68,519 MT of waste has already been processed at the site from December 3 last year to February 11.
Besides, the MC is processing 200 MT of daily waste at Patvi in Ambala through windrow and trommel machines. It has initiated a tendering process for MRF facilities, including the design of 792 compost pits at Alipur village, which is expected to be completed within 30-60 days following the allotment of the tender.
