WASHINGTON, Apr 21 (Sputnik) White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday that there is no basis in fact in the allegations that the United States plotted to assassinate Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
“I can confirm there’s no basis in fact there,” Psaki said during a press briefing.
On Saturday, Russia’s Federal Security Service and the Belarusia’s State Security Committee announced the arrest of two individuals who allegedly planned to stage a coup in Belarus and assassinate Lukashenko.
According to the FSB, lawyer Yuri Zenkovich and political scientist Alexander Feduta, both members of the Belarusian opposition, planned to topple Lukashenko during the Victory Day parade in Minsk on May 9. The plan purportedly included seizing control of Belarusian television and radio, and taking Belarus off the electric grid to thwart communication of special police units and troops.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in earlier remarks that the West remains ignorant to some events in third countries such as the plotted assassination on Lukashenko and the attempted armed coup in this country.
