New Delhi : Rocket scientist V Narayanan has been appointed the new Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission, succeeding S Somanath, whose tenure ends next week. Narayanan’s appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, effective January 14, 2025.

Narayanan, currently serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Valiamala, brings nearly four decades of experience to his new role. He has held several significant positions within the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), contributing extensively to the nation’s space advancements.

The Secretary of the Department of Space also serves as the Chairman of ISRO, and Narayanan’s leadership is expected to steer the space agency forward with his vast expertise in rocket science and space exploration.

Somanath, who has held the position since January 2022, will complete his three-year term next week.
