UT Chandigarh: Corpn elections held peacefully, 60 pc turn up
Chandigarh, Dec 24: Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections for 36 Wards were held peacefully on Friday. Polling started at 7.30 in the morning, long queues of young women and were seen in some polling stations. It was observed that elder citizens were more enthusiastic in electing their wardens than the middle age populace in the UT city. Women voters also turned out in large numbers makling long queues.
According to poll officers in the city, to conduct peaceful elections, 3700 police personnal were deployed for 694 polling booths and extra police personnel have been deployed for 219 sensitive booths.
The city has a total 633481 listed voters, out of which 332181 men, 301280 women and 20 third gender voters will decide the luck of 203 candidates. Over 60% turnover was reported by the evening.
Counting will be held on Monday, election results will be declared by the early evening on December 27.
