1840 – The first U.S. photographic patent was issued to Alexander S. Wolcott of New York City.

1847 – Robert W. Thomson of Adelphi, Middlesex, England was issued the first U.S. patent for Rubber tyres.

1879 – The first U.S. patent for an automobile was filed by George Baldwin Selden of Rochester, N.Y. It was issued almost two decades later, on 5 Nov 1898 for a unique combination of an internal combustion engine and a road vehicle.

1886 – Coca-Cola, the soft drink, was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia. “Coca-Cola” letters as the famous logo.

1915 – Bhai Balmukund  (32) alongwith Master Amir Chand, Awadh Behari and Basant Kumar Vishwas, the 3 other Krantikari youth given verdict by a British judge. They were accused of throwing a crude bomb on Viceroy Lord Hardings on 23rd Dec. 1912 in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. (pic credit-.Wikipedia)

1933 – Congress leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi begins a 21-day fast of self-purification and launched a one-year campaign to help the Harijan movement (pic credit-AD).

1945 – Following Germany’s unconditional surrender, World War II in Europe officially ended at midnight. It also resulted in division of Germany and construction of Berlin Wall (later demolished in 1989,  following the  unification of  East and West Germany).

1954 – Indian Government decided to integrate Chandranagar in West Bengal which was under the rule of the French.

1959 – India declares: ‘Dalai Lama will not be allowed to campaign for Tibetan independence in India. India wants to maintain friendly relations with Communist China.’

1962 – The era of the trolleybus in London ended.

1996 – The governing Congress party is routed in Indian Lok Sabha  elections that have left no party with a clear mandate to govern.

1997 – India decides to import currency notes for the first time.

2011 – A near riot breaks out at the Beijing Apple Store as the Apple iPad2 goes on sale in the People’s Republic of China.

2014 – Researchers have developed synthetic nucleobases, the molecules that form the backbone of DNA; organisms successfully replicated the synthetic bases, implying that creation of new life forms with these additional bases may be possible in the future.

2014 – World’s oldest astrolabe (mariner’s navigator tool) c. 1498 from Portuguese shipwreck of explorer Vasco da Gama found near Al Hallaniyah Island, Oman.

2018 – President Trump pulls the US out of the multilateral Iran nuclear deal.

2020 – 11-year old Brazilian skateboarder Gui Khury creates world record by performing 1st 1080 degree turn on a vertical ramp.

2021 – Indian Medical Association calls for a national lockdown, criticizing Prime Minister Modi  government’s response as recorded COVID-19 deaths pass 4,000 a day.

1906 – General PN Thapar, 5th Army Chief from May 08, 1961  to Nov. 19, 1962 . He was the father of noted journalist Karan Thapar and uncle of historian Romilla Thapar. He is believed to be responsible of India’s debacle in 1962  Indo-China War (alongwith  the then Defence Minister VR Krishna Menon). He served as India’s Ambassador to Afghanistan after retirement upto 1969).

1916 – Chinmayananda Saraswati, spiritual leader and educator. He wrote 95 books on Upnishdas, Bhagvat Gita and Vedas.

1965 – Shiny Abraham, athlete. (She has been a National Champion in 800 metres for 14 years. She collected a total of 18 gold and two silver medals from the seven South Asian Federation Meets she has competed). She has represented India in 75 sports events. (pic Credit-SportsKeeda)
