1659 – Aurangzeb, the  6th ruler of the Mughal Empire, formally ascended the throne of Delhi. He ruled over large parts of India between  1658 to 1707. He was the son of Shah Jahan and Begham Mumtaz Mahal.

1661 – Isaac Newton admitted as a student to Trinity College, Cambridge.

1783 – The first hot-air balloon ascent – unmanned – flew for ten minutes. It was made by the French brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier.

1876 – Bananas become popular in US, at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

1882 – Storm & floods hit Bombay; when  about 100,000 die.

1937 – Henry Ford initiates 32 hour work week in his automobile factory.

1944 – German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel goes on leave just before WW-II,  the D-Day landings by the Allies. (On this day General Eisenhower also decides invasion date for June 6).

1977 – First personal computer, the Apple II, went on sale. It was the invention of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

1984 – Operation ‘Blue Star’ was launched. Commandos stormed into Golden Temple to flush out the terrorists and other anti-government elements. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and over 325 people were killed in the operation.

1989 – Missile `Trishul’ tested successfully DRDO. It’s a guided Missile which can be launched from land or  ship  with an  activation time of 6 seconds and a range of  300m to 9 km . Now it is being manufactured by Bharsat Dynamics with Russian and Israeli  collaboration.

1994 – India test-fires a missile capable of reaching targets in China.

2002 – Pakistan rejected the proposal of common patrol along the Indian border.

2013 – The first article based on NSA leaked documents by Edward Snowden are published by the Guardian Newspaper in the UK.

2019 – On average, people ingest 50,000 pieces of microplastic a year and breathe in similar amount, according to first-ever such study published in journal “Environmental Science and Technology”.

Born…. 1879 – Narayan Malhar Joshi, the father of the ‘Trade Union Movement’ in India (pic credit-alchetron.com).  

1952 – Mukesh Bhatt, Gujarati Brahmin film actor/producer, brother of  veteran Bollywood producer/director Mahesh Bhatt;  he has  produced  some successful films like Jurm, Aashiqui, Raaz, Love Games,  Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin,  Murder, Ghulam, Sadak etc. He was nominated to  Filmfare awards 4 times.

1961 – Ramesh Krishnan, most prolific  Indian  tennis star.  Son of  legendary  tennis  veteran   Ramanathan Krishnan  As a junior in the late 1970s, he won men’s singles titles at Wimbledon and the French Open. He later coaced Indian tennis teams. Ramesh was honoured with  Padma Shri,  Arjuna  Khel  Ratna award and other honours.

1972 – Yogi Adityanath current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh since 19 March 2017. He has been the Member of Parliament from the Gorakhpur constituency, Uttar Pradesh, for five consecutive terms since 1998.

1988 – Ajinkya Rahane. Veteran Bombay Ranji Trophy player and India Test  team captain. He plays for Chennai  Super Kings in IPL format.  He was awarded  Arjuna Khel Ratna honour in 2016.

RIP….  1942 – Master Madan, a talented ghazal and song singer from pre-independence India. He was an artist who rose to fame as a teenager in the 1930s and died at the age of just 15.

1973 – Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar, politician and 2nd  Sarsanghchalak  of  Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). from June 21, 1940 to June  05, 1973.  Was influenced by the Hindu  nationalist  ideologies of  legendary  leader/thinker Mahamana  Madan Mohan Malviya during his studies at Benaras Hindu University  for  M. Sc. in Biology. He  founded  Hindu  Mahasabha and Hindu Rakshak Dal.  Known for his intellectual commentary on Indian politics and religion, he was popular as   Guruji,  to his followers,  he nurtured the RSS   into an effective and disciplined  organisation.  He wrote several books on Hondu culture, against caste system and  explaing   Manusmriti in  practice and many more on World politics during  mid-20th century.

2.  The longest  Champagne  Cork flight  over 177  ft. 9 inches  is a World Record. Heinrich Medicus (USA) ejected a cork from an untreated and unheated champagne bottle standing 1.22 m (4 ft) from level ground to a distance of 54.18 m (177 ft 9 in) at the Woodbury Vineyards Winery, New York, USA on 5 June 1988.
