1926 – the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, introduces a tax on ears for Tibetans to equip the army. Those with only one ear will pay half the tax. 1937 – The first shopping carts were introduced at the Humpty Dumpty supermarket in Oklahoma City, invented by the store owner Sylvan Goldman.

1959 – The first Indian Governor General of India (June 21, 1948 – January 26, 1950), Chakravarti Rajagopalachari later on opposed the Socialist Policies of Indian National Congress under PM Nehru and founded Swatantra Party alongwith Murari Vaidya, Rajas of Ramgarh, Darbhanga, Later on Congress critics Minoo Masani, NG Ranga, KM Munshi, Field Marshall KM
Cariappa and Maharaja of Paiala joined them .
1973 – A patent for the ATM (Any Time Money), is granted to Don Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain.
1987 – A Swedish Government enquiry finds that Bofors paid commission to middlemen for concluding Arms Purchase Agreement with India. Some higher up in the Congress Govt. (PM Rajiv Gandhi and his close friends were alleged to have been invloved in the deal worth $ 1,437 crores and bribes worth $ 64 crores).
1993 – The Babri tribunal strikes down ban on RSS and Bajrang Dal and upholds outlawing of VHP.

2005 – LK Advani described Mohammad Jinnah as a secular person in Karachi during his visit to his birth place in Pakistan. The statement found many critics in India and even in his own party Bhartiya Janta Party, RSS, Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal..
2019 – Movement in Japan to end compulsory wearing of high heels in work places trends with hashtag #KuToo.
2024 – Bharatiya Janata Party wins the most seats but not a majority, in the country’s Lok Sabha elections.
Born…. 1936 – Nutan Samarth, known mononymously as Nutan was an actress who worked in Hindi films. Regarded a
s one of the finest actresses in the history of Indian cinema, Known for her roles in Sujata, Anaari, Bandini, Saudagar, Milan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki etc. among about 80 films. Nutan was noted for her naturalistic acting in parts of conflicted women often deemed unconventional. She was the recipient of seven Filmfare Awards, including a then-record five Filmfare Awards for Best Actress.

1947 – Ashok Saraf, stage actor and comedian. He has appeared in many Marathi and Hindi language films like Ek Daav Bhutacha, Dhum Dhadaka, Karan Arjun, Yes Boss, Joru Ka Ghulam, Singham, Pyaa Kiya to Darna Kya, and TV serials in supporting roles. He was awarded V shantaram Award, Sangeet Natak Award, Maharashtra Bhushan and Padam shri in 2025.
1959 – Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, an Indian businessman, younger son of Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani. He was the chairman of Reliance Group, which was created in July 2006
following a demerger from Reliance Industries Limited. He married popular film actress Tina Munim in 1991 and has 2 sons Anmol Ambani and Jai Anshul Ambani.

RIP…. 1989 – Melville de Mellow, eminent news and sports broadcaster. (I can still clearly recall the 27 May 1964 AIR 1:00 pm news bulletin, that I heard in our Kupwara Battalion mess. Breaking the news of Nehru’s death in an emotional voice Melville’s first four words were, “The light is out“).
You may have known…. Indian -Amercan engineer Vinod Dham, is the creator of Pentium chip. Known as the Father of Pentium chip, is a Delhi College of Engineering graduate, who went to the US and studied at University of Cincinnati (U.S.) and led the formation of Intel Chip , 90 % of today’s computers run on it. He is the co-founder and CEO of ACADGILD and set venture capital fund – Indo-US Venture Partners. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan by the President of India Droupadi Murmu in 2025.
