1769 – Venetian blinds were patented in London by Edward Bevan.
1844 – The first dental anaesthetic, nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) was used by Dr. John M. Riggs for a tooth extraction.
1911 – Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel prize. She had isolated radium by electrolyzing molten radium chloride. (This second prize was for her individual achievements in Chemistry, whereas her first prize (1903) was a collaborative effort with her husband, Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel in Physics for her contributions in the discovery of radium and polonium).
1958 – Wilson LG Jones became India’s first individual World Champion when he won the Amateur BilliardsChampionship (pic credit-Cue Sports India).
1967 – People’s front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) established.
1967 – The Concorde, a joint British-French venture and the world’s first supersonic airliner, was unveiled in Toulouse, France.
1971 – The elite para-commandos and parachute battalions – India’s ‘Red Devils’, as they are affectionately called – have an unsurpassed ethos and elan of their own. 2 Para Battalion executed a superb airborne assault operation at Tangail in East Pakistan, which was the first of its kind in the subcontinent.
1991 – The Centre notifies the interim order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal directing Karnataka to release 205 tmc ft of water to Tamil Nadu.
1997 – More than 150 countries agreed at a global warming conference in Kyoto, Japan to control the Earth’s greenhouse gases.
2017 – Rahul Gandhi is elected leader of the Indian National Congress.
2019 – Climate activist Greta Thunberg is named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
2019 – India passes Citizenship Amendment Bill clearing way for citizenship for immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan but not if they are Muslim.
2022 – NASA’s Orion spacecraft returns to earth after completing Artemis I test flight around the moon in 25.5 days – record distance traveled by a spacecraft designed to carry humans

1882 – Subramanya Bharathy, most popular Tamil poet of South India, also called Mahakavi. He wrote Kaṇṇan pāṭṭu (1917; Songs to Krishna), Panchali sapatham (1912; Panchali’s Vow), and Kuyil pāṭṭu (Kyuil sonmgs)
1922 – Dilip Kumar, legendary Bollywood actor, known for Devdas, Naya Daur, Mughal-e Azam.
