1964 — Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life in prison in South Africa. by aparthied rule of  White President  P. W. Botha.  He spent  27 years in the prison and was released  in  1990.

1935 – Senator Huey Long of Louisiana spoke continually for 15½ hours in Senate’s longest speech on record (150,000 words).

1952 – J&K Assembly decided to terminate the  hereditary Monarchy, paving the way to install Sheikh  Abdullah as Prime Minister of the state and making Raja Hari Singh , as the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir.

1965 – Big Bang theory of creation of universe is supported by announcement of discovery of new celestial bodies know as blue galaxies.

1975 – Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is found guilty of electoral corruption in her successful 1971 campaign. The verdict delivered by Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court had convicted her of electoral malpractices and debarred her from holding any elected post under the Representative of Peoples Act. Despite calls for her resignation, Gandhi refused to give up India’s top office and later declared Emergency in the country when public demonstrations threatened to topple her to  administration. The Emetgency lasted  from June 25, 1975 March  21, 1977.

1990 – Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1D) launched. This is an operational multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite. It is still in service. It was launched by US Delta launch vehicle, Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA.

2016 – Saina Nehwal won the Australian Open title for the second time. She won the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament title in women’s singles category. She defeated Chinese Sun Yu in the finals.

2018 – Singapore Summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump – first time a North Korean leader and an incumbent US President have ever met.

Born…. 1932 – Padmini, legendary  Tamil and Bollywood  film actress and  a  trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She acted in over  films in 30 years including Tamil, Malyalam, Hindi and Russian laguage. He elder sister Lalitha and younger sister  Ragini, collectively were famous as Travacore Sisters, for   their  outstanding film and cultural performances. Her roles in Sampoorna Ramayan, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Payasl. Ashiw, Afsana and Mera Naam Joker etc. gained excellent applause. She won several National, international and state awards including Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award.

1932 – E. Sreedharan, popularly known as the “Metro Man,” is a renowned Indian civil engineer and public servant. He is best known for his instrumental role in the planning and execution of several major infrastructure projects in India, particularly in the field of urban transportation including Komkan Railway and Delhi Mewtro etc.

RIP…. 1761 – Balaji Bajirao (Nanasaheb), third peshwa, died after losing in the battle of Panipat. (12 or 23 June?).

1997 – Mihir Sen, long distance swimmer. He swam Panama  and English channels solo.

2003 – Gregory Peck, American actor.
