1670 – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj launched his second raid on Surat which was under Mughal rule.

1831 – British army  captures Mysore.

1880 – First Marathi musical play, Sangeet Shakuntal, staged in Pune.

1906 – SOS adopted as warning signal.

1922 – First facsimile photo sent over telephone lines.

1952 – First video recording on magnetic tape believed to be by Nikola Tesla (pic credit-recording-history.org).

1977 – Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was arrested on corruption charges related to the purchase of jeeps for her  election campaign. PM Morarji Desai was not in favour of her arrest but Finance Minister Charan Singh insisted, as a  retaliatory action, which later boomeraged. She was released by the Court soon.

1978: The first Indian test-tube baby was born in Kolkata. This was the second such birth in the world.

1984 – The first long-distance train, the Himsagar Express, was started. Beginning its journey from the southern-most town of India, Kanyakumari  to the northern pilgrimage  station  Vaishno Devi in J&K,  It covered 3,790 km distance in 73 kours at an average  speed of 52 km per hour, stopping at 73 stations (pic credit-Indian Railways).

1992: – Geet (Sriram) Sethi won the World Professional Billiards Championship with a record  1,276 break points in  Billiards..

2010 – The 19th Commonwealth Games opened in Delhi. A total of 4,352 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed 272 events across 21 sports, making it the largest Commonwealth Games, in terms of participation, to date. The events were held across 12 venues. Australia led the medal tally with 177 medals including 74 golds. India achieved its best performance ever at the Commonwealth Games, finishing second, winning 101 medals including 38 golds (pic credit-lastdodo.com).

2018 – The most expensive whisky ever sold at auction is the Macallan Valerio Adami. The 1926 make  brand,  sold for $1.1 million in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Born…. 1903 – Swami Ramanand Tirth, freedom fighter, social activist  and educationist.  Born as  Vyenkatesh Bhagvanrao Khedgikar  in Gjranwala distt. of  Punjab (now in Pakistan), he led  his volunteers to free Hyderabad riyasat from  Osman  Ali Khan’s rule,  in 1948.  Prime Minister  PV Narasimha  Rao  established  a  memorial in  Hyderabad  and  Swami Ramanand Tirath University was established  in Nanded in 1994, having  172  colleges  in  the Marathwada region.

RIP…. 1923 – Kadambini Bose Ganguly from Bhagalpur was  the first woman graduate and a physician in India (pic credit-trendynews.com).

You may have known….  The exact total number of women who have committed Sati throughout history is unknown, but there were 28 officially reported cases between 1943 and 1987 in India.
