On this day, 10 Sep ….                                                                                                                                                                           1846 – Elias Howe of Spencer, Massachusetts, received a patent for his hand-cranked sewing machine. Though Isaac Singer patented one five years later. Howe sued Singer for infringement and won…but by that time Singer was well ahead in the sewing machine business.

1869 – Baptist minister invents rickshaw in Yokohama, Japan. (Though the origins of the rickshaw are not entirely clear, they seem to be Japanese, and of Tokyo specifically).

1896 – The first successful surgery on heart muscle was performed by Ludwig Rehn in Frankfurt , Germany, who sutured a myocardial laceration of a 22-yr-old man stabbed in a drunken brawl.

1964 – Palestinian Liberation Army (PLA)  is formed,  comprising  of  Gaza  Strip  and  West Bank, near East Jerusalem.  It has an area of 6,032 sqkm and a population of  over 50 lakhs.  Though it has a history of wars between  Jews and  Muslims,  after Alexander’s  fall;  the UNO  marked the areas in 1947. Yet due  to  intermitent  wars, there  was  no  peaceful  co-existence.  Yasser Arafat  led  Al Fatah  controlled  PLO and Mehmoud  Abbas  partly supported by militant  Hamas  group, represented  the  two  factions  since 1960s.

1966 – Parliament approved the Punjab Re-organisation Bill for the formation of Haryana and Punjab, as two independent states, after Punjabi Suba agitation on 1960s.

1977 – The Planning Commission decides to introduce the Rolling Plan concept.

1984 – DNA fingerprinting was discovered in Leicester, England, by Alec Jeffreys as X-ray films of his tests first revealed the possibility. As he studied the image, at first what he saw seemed just a complicated mess. Then WP Codeers-up in the US Open doubles.

Born…. 1872 – Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji “Ranji”, was  Maharaj Jamsaheb of Nawanagar and a great cricketer. He was a distant relative of  Nawanagar/Jamnagar  state, so became  heir to the throne following deaths of  King and his first heir.  He was referred as “The Prince of  a little State, but the King of a Great Game”.   He played  15 Test matches for England and mostly for  County Sussex and later came to India to become heir to the Jamnagar throne from 1907 to 1933. Cricket board  (BCCI) annonced the national  tornament,  Ranji Trophy in his name in 1933-34 after his death. The trophy was donated by his friend  Raja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala;  it  trains first class players of the country,  where 38 teams from states and important cities participate.

1999 – Top seeds Bhupathi and Paes finished runners up , in the  US Open Doubles.

1887 – Govind Ballabh Pant. He was an outstanding educationist, lawyer and  parliamentary figure of his days. Had been Chief Minister of U.P. from April 1946 till January 1950 and became  Home Minister of India  on January 25, 1955 till  March 7, 1961 (his death).  Was awarded with Bharat Ratna in 1957.

1923 – Ram Jethamalani, prominent lawyer and BJP politician. Sindh province  (now in Pakistan)  born  Ram was the Minister of Law & Justice in AB Vajpayee Govt. and headed Supreme Court Bar Association.

1972 – Anurag Kashyap, screenwriter, director/producer. Known for out of the Box film  subjects, he started his career under veteran  Ram Gopal Verma through  Satya. Ten he directed/produced films like Paanch, Black Friday, Mukka Baaz, No Smoking, Dev D, Gulaal, Lunch Box, Sacred Games, Mein Aisa Hi Hoon, Yuva, Paisa Vasool  etc. He won 4 Filmfare and Order of Arts & Letters at Cannes Film Ferstival  in France in 2013.

RIP….1915 – Jatindranath Mukhrjee,  famous as Bagha Jatin, was a  great revolutionary, died after being wounded in a pitched battle between the revolutionaries and the police, aided by an army unit, in Balasore. Born in Nadia (Khulna Div), now in Bangladesh,  Jatin was co-founder of Jugantar Party of revolutionaries, was fond of  caricature and enacting religious plays, himself playing the roles of god-loving characters like Prahlad, Dhruva, Hanuman, Râja Harish Chandra as well as courageous personalities like Pratapaditya. He not only encouraged several playwrights to produce patriotic pieces for the urban stage, but also engaged village bards to spread nationalist fervour in the countryside. He visited  Manila, San Francisco,  Berlin. Tokyo  etc. and  founded journal Ghadar, invoking  local Indians, including Sikh community towards freedom movement.  Vishnu Ganresh Pingle, Kartar Singh Sabha and many others were his associates  in revolutionary  activities.

You may have known…. Under various articles of the Indian Constitution, free and compulsory education is provided as a fundamental right to children between the ages of 6 and 14.
