1184 BC – The City of Troy  of  Canakkale  (now  Turkey), was ransacked and burned  by the Greek, in  Trojan War,  that took place around the twelfth or thirteenth century BC. The war was waged by the Achaeans (Greeks) against the city of Troy after Paris of  Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta. believed to be waged  by Homer,  in the Iliad tales.  It is now a UNESCO Heritage site. 1644 – Florentine scientist, Evangelista Torricelli described in a letter to Michelangelo, the invention of a barometer, or “torricellian tube.

1742 – Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin stove.
1866 – The Agra High Court (now the Allahabad High Court)  sitated in Prayagraj, (U.P.)   is established.

1928 – The world’s first rocket-propelled aircraft flight was made over the Rhon Mountains, Germany.

1946 – Viceroy interviewed Gandhiji, and mooted proposal of Coalition Government at the Centre.

1964 – The ashes of the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru were scattered throughout the country.

1976 – Indira Gandhi and Brezhnev sign the Moscow Declaration of Friendship and Cooperation.
1997 – Shooter Jaspal Rana and J. Abhijit in the men’s section and Nisha Millet in the women’s section adjudged best sports persons of the National Games.

1998 – Scientists deciphered the last of the genetic material of bacterium that causes tuberculosis.

1999 – India provided incontrovertible tape evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the Kargil sector. The Indian army killed 23 intruders in the Batalik and Dras sectors but lost 15 of its men.

2012 – The Nobel Prize  money  is reduced by 20% to Swedish  Kroner 11 million   (about  US $1.2 m)  to  prevent any future undermining of capital.  The prize amount is  given from Nobel  Foundation  funds managed by  the  Alfred Nobel’s  family and other trustees.

2021 – Pulitzer Prizes and special citation awarded to Darnella Frazier for recording the murder of George Floyd in the May 20 by  American Police officers  with anti-Blacks  cruelty  intentions, in  Minnkiaspolis  (U.S.).

Born…. 1948 – * Laloo Prasad Yadav,  popular Bihar politician,former Chief Minister of Bihar, former Union Ralway  Minister in  UPA  govt.  A  follower  of  Jaiprakash  Narain  during  anti-Indira movement of  1974-77, he won Chhapra seat in 1977 on Janta Party ticket as a prominent Yadav leader. In 1990 he became the Bihar  CM  with  support  from   then  Dy PM  Devi  Lal. Following allegations of hisi invelovement  in Fodder Scam during 1997,  he broke  away  and  formed  RJD. His  Party  won  21  seats  in  2004  and  joined the UPA  govt. led by Dr. Manmohan  Singh  as  Railway Minister. It’s  alleged  his  family was invloved in offering Raliway jobs against  land plots from job  seakers and for Railway tenders. He’s still facing many court cases against corruption, though his son is the LoP in Bihar. *(also published on June 09  by error).

RIP…. 1983 – Ghanshyam Das Birla, , social reformer, pioneer of Indian business, industry, and nationalist businessman and member of the Birla Family. With an investment of ₹5 million in 1919, the Birla Brothers Limited was formed. In 1926, he was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly of British India. He became the founding president of Harijan Sevak Sangh founded by Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi in 1932.

2000 -Rajesh Pilto (Squadron Leader Rajeshwar Prasad,)  a  friend  of  PM Rajiv Gandhi  left the Indian Air Force,   became a politician, a  Union Minister  in Rajiv  ministery. He belonged to the  Bidhudi Gurjar  clan  of Rajasthan. He represented the Dausa constituency in Lok Sabha. He died in a car crash near Jaipur, (believed to be a sabotage) .

Titbits…. 1939 – Prince Philp  (King)   & Queen Elizabeth-II  of England tasted 1st “Hot-dogs dish ” at the US President  FD Roosevelt’s party (pic credit-nps.gov).

You may have known…. Of US tech workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher, 23% came from India.
