1869 – Thomas Edison received his first patent for an “electrographic vote recorder’  (EVM). The device was the first of its kind,  and would enable a legislator to register a vote either for or against an issue by turning a switch to the right or left.

1874 – East India Company was dissolved by the British Parliament and  took direct control over India and other territories.

1930 – India’s first Deluxe train Deccan Queen ran from Bombay VT to Pune (about 220 km distance).

1938 – Superman created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster made his first appearance in D.C. Comics’ Action Co

1955 – India’s Untouchability (Offence) Act comes into force.

1961 – Regular FM stereo radio broadcasting began in the U.S.

1972 – Space Commission and Department of Space was set up. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) brought under Department of Space (DOS).

1980 – The cable news network (CNN) television network first began broadcasting. 2001 – The King, Queen and seven other members of the royal family in Nepal are shot dead, by  the heir to the throne Crown Prince Dipendra, who  went on a rampage with a gun before turning it on himself. The reason behind the  heineous culd not be ascertained; it could be a family discord  with love affair  angle (Devyani Rana) or  intoxication due to heavy drinking and  special   branded cigarette  usage.

2022 – Turkey officially changes its name to Türkiye.

Born…. 1842 – Satyendranath Tagore, the second eldest brother of Rabindranath Tagore, an author, song composer, and linguist. He was the first Indian to join the Indian Civil Service.

1929 – Nargis Dutt (Fatima Rashid),  who beloged to a converted Brahmin family of  Rawalpindi. Was a legendary actress and politician who worked in Hindi cinema. She did her first film Talaash-e-Haq as a child artist at the age of just 6 years, later in the year 1942 she made a tremendous performance as an actress in the film “Tamanna”. She was the first film actress who got the Padma Shri  in 1958.  Known for films like  Ramayani, Aag, Mela, Raat Aur Din, Adalat, Chori Chori, Barasat,  Shri 420, Awara, Mother India, Andaaz, Taqdeer,  etc.  Though she did most films with  much  iconic romance and  comic  hero Raj Kapoor, yet she married Sunil Dutt (as Nirmala Dutt)  after a fire accident during Mother India shooting.  She was awarded  Padma Shri,  a National  2  Filmfare awards, and Best Actress of the Millennium award  by Hero Honda and film magazine Stardust.  Nargis was also  nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1980. She  died of Cancer on May 03, 1981. 

1970 – R. Madhavan, actor, producer, and screenwriter. Acted mostly in Hindi,  Tamil , Kannada   and English  films like Alai Payuthe,  Breathe, Saala Khadoos,  3 Idiots, Vikram Vedha, Ghar Jamai, Banegi Apni Baat,  Rang De Basanti, Guru, Tanu Weds Manu etc. and several TV serials. He has won a National Film award, 5 Filmfare South and is  current President of FTII Pune.

1990 – Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor, a campaigner for the rights of acid attack victims, and the former director of NGO Chhanv Foundation, dedicated to helping acid attack survivors in India. Laxmi Agarwal was attacked in 2005 in New Delhi at the age of 15. She has since established campaigns for tackling the surge of acid attacks. The film Chhapaak is based on Agarwal’s life story and was released on 10 January 2020 which stars Deepika Padukone in her role.

RIP…. 1830 – Swaminarayan, also known as Sahajanand Swami, was a yogi and ascetic whose life and teachings brought a revival of central Hindu practices of dharma, ahimsa, and Brahmacharya. He is the founder of BAPS, an organisation which estasbished several Swaminaayan temples including in UAE.

1984 – Nana Palshikar, veteran film actor who appeared in more than 80 Hindi films. like Shehar Aur sapna, Kanoon, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Gandhi etc. He won 2 Filmfares and one BFJA awards.

 

1996 – Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the Sixth President of India, serving from 1977 to 1982. He was the first Chief Minister of Andhra,  Union Minister and Speaker of Lok Sabha twice.  He  had  contested the President of India post  on Congress ticket  in  August 1969 but was defeated  by PM Indira Gandhi due to political  reasons. Yet he was elected to the post inJuly 1977 as Janata Party  candidate  but elected  unopposed.

You may have known…. 1.  Presently, there are more than 7,100 different languages in use around the world.

2.  India is second largest producer of sugarcane  after  Brazil  (782,585,836  tons.  India (490,533,351 tons ), a

nd China stands third at  104,565,500 tons as of 2023 figures.
