1609 – The telescope was demonstrated by  legendary astronomer Galileo.

1617 – The first one-way streets were established in London. An Act of Common Council was passed to regulate the “disorder and rude behaviour of Carmen, Draymen and others using Cartes.”

1899 – The first ship-to-shore wireless message to be received in the U.S was: “Sherman is sighted.”

1966 – The US Spacecraft,   Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of the Earth from the Moon. It also sent photographs of the Moon’s surface  to guide future landing.

1833 – Britain abolishes Slavery in Colonies; 700,000 slaves freed.

1839 – British capture Hong Kong from China after Quing Dynasty lost the First  Opium War. The island  spread just over  1,114 SqKm , was developed as a  shipping pad and   Free Trade Nation by the British. Hong Kong was captured by the Japanese forces in 1941  and ceded to Britain after  World War II in 1945.  In 1997  the island was handed back to China at the end of their  lease agreement.

1947 – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was sworn is as the Deputy Prime Minister (and Home Minister) of India. In the election to the post of Congress President (and  the next Prime Minister after Independence)  on April 29, 1946, out of 15,  almost  all,  12  Working Committee members had voted for Sardar Patel and 3 abstained,  not a single member nominated Jawaharlal Nehru for the post.  But Mahatma Gandhi, favoured Nehru and asked JB Kriplani to  gather support for Nehru.  Sardar Patel  withdrew  on Gandhi’s  insistence  and let  Nehru be the Party  head and  ultimately PM  of India.  Sardar Patel was offered Dy. PM’s post, which he politely agreed, citing  service to the nation as his priority.

1996 – Osama bin Laden issues message entitled ‘A declaration of war against the Americans occupying the land of the two holy places.’

2000 – India, Japan unveil new global partnership and agree to  a formal security dialogue. Sanctions status quo  on CTBT.

2023 – India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission became  the first  to land at the Moon’s southern pole successfully and make India the fourth country to ever land on the Moon.

2007 – 30 manuscripts of Rigveda were included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register-2007. Reg Veda  are  10 Book collections of 1,028  hymes in Sanskrit  and their explainations on early family life, Prabhu Stuti  (prayers)  and guiding priciples.  (pic credit-kahaniplace.in).  

Born…. 1923 –  Balram Jakhar.  A freedom fighter, politician and former Speaker of  Lok Sabha. for 9 years 233 days, (longest term). He also served as Leaders of Opposition in Punjab Assembly (1977-80), Union Minister for Agriculture (1991-96) and later Governor of Madhya Padesh and Gujarat.

1944 – Saira Banu,  popular Bollywood  actress. Known for films like  Shagird, Sagina,  Diwana, Bluff Master, Aayee Milan Ki Bela, Jhuk Gaya asmaan,  Bairag, Janglee, Padosan, Bairag, Poorab Aur Paschim,  Shaadi, Balidan Faisla etc. She married legendary actor  Dilip Kumar in 1966.  She was nominated to Filmfare award 4 times and won a Raj Kapoor Film award in   Lifetime Achievement.

1973 – Malaika Arora Khan, Bollywood  choreographer, actor, video jockey, TV  model. Co-founded Arbaaz Khan Productions  with his husband Arbaaz Khan (younger brother of popular actor Salman Khan)  and produced  Dabangg  film series, House Full 2, Happy New Year, Welcome, Dolly Ki Doli etc.

RIP…. 2000 – PR Kumaramangalam, Union Power Minister in NDA-I, dies of a massive heart attack at the AIIMS, New Delhi. A  Lok Sabha Member from Salem and  Tiruchirapalli, and  former Union Minister in PV Narasimha Rao Govt.,  he  joined BJP in 1998 and served as Minister for Power.  He was the grandson of  former CM  P Subbarayan  (Madras State) and nephew of for Army Chief  Gen. PP Kumaramangalam.

2018 – Kuldip Nayar, a famous writer and journalist. After working for many years as the Press Information Officer of the Government of India, he was associated with UNI, PIB, ‘The Statesman’, and ‘Indian Express’ for a long time. Kuldeep Nayar was also a correspondent for ‘The Times’ London for 25 years.
