Six students suspended for defying K’taka HC order on ‘Hijab’
Mangaluru: Hijab row has once again raised its ugly hood in the state with suspension of six Muslim girl students for allegedly defying the Karnataka High Court order on dress code in educational institutions. On Thursday, the suspended students had allegedly arrived at the Uppinangady First Grade College wearing a dupatta as hijab in the classroom. Following which, the college authorities, in a meeting, decided to suspend them from attending classes.
They feared that allowing them to attend the classes wearing hijab would provoke other community students to protest.
In March this year, Karnataka High Court upheld the dress code norms implemented by educational institutions in the state after dismissing the writ petitions filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab during teaching hours in classrooms.
The Court also ordered that wearing of hijab is not an essential religious part of Islam.
The hijab row erupted in the state after a government pre-university college Udupi prohibited six Muslim girls from attending classes in hijab claiming violation of the college dress code. (UNI)
