Shimla MC Calls for One-Time Settlement of Illegal Buildings
Seeks Government Decision on Fate of Over 10,000 Unauthorised Structures
Shimla : The Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has proposed a one-time settlement to resolve the status of over 10,000 illegal buildings constructed in violation of local building norms. This proposal is part of an ongoing effort to address the nearly 25,000 such structures across the state, with the majority concentrated in Shimla, especially in areas recently merged into the municipal corporation.
SMC councillors have long been advocating for this settlement, citing the need for a definitive decision on these buildings, many of which are unable to receive water or electricity connections due to their illegal status.
The move follows the Supreme Court’s approval of the Shimla Development Plan, which has raised hopes of a final resolution. However, previous retention policies have failed to address the issue, as many residents continue to build illegally, expecting further relief.
