Mumbai, April 6: Riding with the current world currency sentiments, Rupee tumbled down 44 paise to close at 75.75 against the greenback on rising demand for US Dollar by bankers and importers, dealers at the Foreign Exchange said. Surging 22 paise on Tuesday, the local unit fell 21 paise to 75.53 in early trade. During the day, it dropped 44 paise to close negative at 75.75 as compared to its previous close. The Rupee slipped owing to the firm dollar against other world currencies amid a weak equity market. The Rupee unit registered the day’s high and low at 75.50 and 75.79 respectively against the US Dollar, a dealer said.
BSE Sensex also lost 566.09 pts to close at 59,610.41 on heavy selling in IT, Technology, Bankex and Finance stocks on Wednesday. The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) slipped 149.75 pts too, to close at 17,807.65. The session started on a weak note, as the Sensex fell by 361 pts to open at 59,815.71. It slumped nearly 667 pts to close at 59,509.84, the day’s low before closing at 59,610.41, sliding 566.09 pts from its previous close. The Sensex registered the day’s high and low at 59,941.57 and 59,509.84 pts respectively. The Nifty recorded the day’s high and low at 17,901 and 17,779.85 respectively. The sectoral indices like IT, Technology, Bankex and Finance dragged the market further. In scrips, HDFC Bank was a major loser, it dipped by 3.51 pc to Rs 1550.80 followed by HDFC by 3.26 pc to Rs 2536.50, HCL Technology by 2.07 pc to Rs 1170.80, Tech Mahindra by 1.97 pc to Rs 1459.60 and Infosys by 1.75 pc to Rs 1828.45. The gainers were NTPC by 2.61 pc to Rs 153.05, Tata Steel by 1.94 pc to Rs 1371, Powergrid by 1.52 pc to Rs 236.60 and Bharti Airtel by 1.17 pc to Rs 775.20.
